JWT’s 15 Ways Mobile Will Change Our Lives—Report shares findings from the recent GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona

In this special report, JWT, the world’s best-known marketing communications brand, explores the emerging trends and insights coming out of the GSMA’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month.
“If one thing’s clear, mobile will disrupt it all, and earlier than we could have expected. The pace at which technology is reshaping the world will only speed up, and many innovations that we may believe belong to the future are here already or even in our past,” said Alex Pallete, JWT Planning Director.
“Online ubiquity provides the catalyst for a new understanding of what mobile means, what mobile does and how it is experienced.”
JWT’s “15 Ways Mobile Will Change Our Lives” outlines key takeaways based on the hundreds of panels, keynotes and exhibitors from Mobile World Congress, providing real-world examples to illustrate the ideas.
Executive Summary:
1) Everything Is ‘Smart’: It’s no longer just our mobile phones that are getting “smart”—that is, gaining access to the Web and the ability to communicate wirelessly. All kinds of things, from cars to refrigerators and entire homes, are getting connected in this way as well. Down the road, as more manufacturers embed WiFi, SIM cards and other technologies into more products, expect anything and everything to link in to the intelligent Internet of Things.
2) Widening Access: Internet access is incredibly important to people around the globe. Mobile providers are expanding infrastructure in rural areas and bolstering existing systems to ensure that more people can communicate, while manufacturers are producing low cost devices that will open up Web access to millions.
3) The Humanization of Tech: As voice and gesture control become more common, our technology (mobile included) will adapt to us, rather than us adapting to it. Our digital experiences will become simpler and more user-friendly.
4) Mobile Device as Wellness Guru: Smartphones will help people lead healthier lives by providing information, recommendations and reminders based on data gathered through sensors embedded in users’ clothing (shoes, wristbands, etc.) or through other phone capabilities (motion detectors, cameras, etc.).
5) Mobile Device as Lifesaver: Internet-enabled mobile devices are becoming important tools in broadening access to health care, diagnosing diseases and saving lives in crisis situations.
6) Smartphone as Everything Interface: The smartphone will become the key interface between connected devices and products (the Internet of Things) and their users. Among other things, people will use the device to remotely control household appliances, interact with screens and automatically adjust car settings to their preferences.
7) Seamless Living: As all kinds of devices get connected to cloud services, mobile technology will help us navigate the world more seamlessly. And as key players like Microsoft, Google and Apple expand their product lines across devices—from televisions to tablets—we’ll see more unified experiences across platforms.
8) Mobile Identity: The mobile device will become a summation of who we are all in one place. It will be packed with personal information and images we’ve accumulated over time and serve as our mobile wallet and keychain, enabled by secure and seamless technologies such as Bluetooth and NFC (near field communication).
9) Friction-free purchasing: The smartphone will become a passkey to the retail experience. QR codes allow smartphone users to shop anytime, anywhere, as we’re seeing with the rise of retailers’ coded out-of-home displays. The integration of NFC in handsets will enable fast and easy mobile payments. And as e-commerce and brick-and-mortar retailing integrate and overlap, shopping may entail simply snapping a photo or tapping a sensor, then collecting the order or having it immediately delivered.
10) Media Multitasking: The mobile is becoming a complement to or distraction from most other types of media platforms and content. Consumers are hopping between screens (and the printed page), toying with their tablet or smartphone as they watch television, play video games, work on their computer and so on.
11) Access Over Ownership: With the proliferation of cloud-based services and Internet-enabled devices, consumers will shift from owning media to accessing it through subscriptions however they want (via various connected devices) and wherever they want.
12) Hyper-Personalization: Mobile devices will increasingly use the data they’re privy to—from purchases made to social interactions to location—to offer information tailored to the user. They will analyze past and current behavior and activity to provide recommendations on where to go, what to do and what to buy.
13) The Data-Sharing Debate: Mobile owners are growing more aware of the value of their personal data. While third parties will seek access to more data (location, browsing history, social graph, etc.) in order to fine-tune personalization engines, people will increasingly think more closely about what they’re willing to share.
14) Security Consciousness: App usage, mobile browsing and mobile payments all put personal data at risk, and security threats are rising. We’ll also see a rise in cloud security concerns and claimed solutions as people share more personal data with third parties and as more businesses store customer and proprietary information in the cloud.
15) “NoMoPhobia”: This term for “no mobile phobia” refers to the fear people feel when separated from their mobile device. With the mobile in particular, our attachments are deepening as the smartphone evolves into an indispensible Everything Hub and as it becomes more closely linked to our identity. Increasingly, going without this appendage will provoke real anxiety.

Credit Card Processing Company Helps Merchants Reduce Processing Costs

Capital Processing Network, a Phoenix-based merchant services provider, announced that it is able to reduce credit card processing fees by an average of .10% for qualified merchants.

Phoenix, Arizona (PRWEB) April 04, 2012
Capital Processing Network, a Phoenix-based merchant service provider, today announced that it is able to cut credit card processing fees by an average of .10% for qualified merchants. The company says it reduces merchant account fees, which are charged with every credit and debit card transaction, resulting in a significant combined savings over the life of the account. Merchant fees, which can vary based on a business’s model and credit rating, can usually be negotiated if a business has lower risk factors than the average organization.
“Every year, millions of merchants are overpaying for credit card processing,” said Jeff Stephan, the CEO for Capital Processing Network. “The average merchant may be lumped into a group with higher risk companies such as bail bondsmen, pawn shops, catalogue, or other organizations that may experience a higher percentage of chargebacks. In the same way that a non-smoker pays less for health insurance, a lower risk merchant can get better rates on credit card processing based on underwriting and interchange qualifications.”
Merchant account fees can represent up to 5% (or more) of a credit card transaction, so in essence a merchant only collects $95 for every $100 worth of goods sold. Considering that many small businesses may process several hundred thousand dollars per year in transactions, a small reduction in processing fees represents real dollars in the merchant’s bank account.
“Many business owners are unaware that they don’t have to use their bank to process credit card transactions,” said Stephan. “We offer a low cost alternative for sole proprietors, LLCs, and corporations, who can keep the same bank account while saving on card processing fees.”
Additionally, many businesses are unaware that they can realize significant savings by upgrading to newer equipment. If a large number of customers are using debit cards to make purchases, the addition of a PIN pad will cut processing fees on debit card transactions where PIN numbers are entered. For contractors and food delivery companies, mobile credit card terminals reduce processing costs whenever a physical card can be swiped. When these steps are taken in conjunction with renegotiated merchant processing fees, both small and large organizations will see more dollars going to their bank accounts.

PATCO Pilot Moves Into Phase Two, Accepting MasterCard and Discover in Addition to Visa Contactless Payment Cards

PATCO Wave & Pay Card Pilot Program Introduces Ride Free for 100 Days Contest
CAMDEN, NJ--(Marketwire - Apr 4, 2012) - Cubic Transportation Systems, Inc., a business segment of Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB) and the integrator of intelligent transport systems and services that created the PATCO Wave & Pay ANYWHERE Visa® Prepaid Card, has announced Phase Two of the open payment pilot program. During Phase two, riders will be able to use a plastic contactless Visa, MasterCard or Discover card, or a virtual card in a mobile wallet, to make secure transit payments at PATCO (Port Authority Transit Corporation) gates and parking terminals.
Riders will simply tap their cards and go, paying their PATCO fares with a quick flick of the wrist.
Officials from Cubic said the PATCO pilot program is designed not only to speed riders through PATCO's stations, but also to gain valuable technical information on the best practices for deploying and operating future contactless payment systems in other transit systems. This will include Chicago where Cubic is under contract to deliver open payment.
"Cubic is excited about Phase Two of the PATCO pilot," said Steve Shewmaker, president, Cubic Transportation Systems Worldwide. "This is all about making wallets slimmer and life for the transit agency and their customers even more convenient."
In 2011, PATCO partnered with Cubic Transportation Systems to create the first transit-agency branded, all contactless Visa prepaid card in the world. This was one of the first times that consumers had been able to use the same transit payment card for both transit and retail purchases. That prepaid payment card, the Wave & Pay ANYWHERE Card, debuted on September 26, 2011, as Phase One of the PATCO pilot program.
"We are pleased to continue our partnership with Cubic and Visa on this groundbreaking pilot," said Delaware River Port Authority (DRPA) CEO and PATCO President John J. Matheussen. "Open payment -- combining a transit payment card with a full-service retail payment card -- is the future of transit fare collection. The PATCO Wave & Pay ANYWHERE Visa Prepaid Card ensures that all of our riders have access to a new level of payment convenience and security."
During Phase One, PATCO riders could pay all of their PATCO fees with the PATCO branded Wave & Pay card, and then use the same card to pick up a gallon of milk or a loaf of bread on the way home. There has never been an enrollment fee to acquire a Wave & Pay card and take part in the pilot program. Wave & Pay cards are still available for PATCO riders online at www.patcopilot.com/. Phase Two of the pilot program comes at the same time as Cubic's Ride Free for 100 Days Contest, open to all PATCO riders.
"We want to reward PATCO riders for participating in this pilot, and a contest with several winners is a fun way to do it," says Cubic's Steve Brunner, vice president and regional director for the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic. "Everyone with a registered Wave & Pay card is eligible to win, and the more times a PATCO rider taps his or her card at the PATCO gates, the more chances they have to win."
Three lucky PATCO riders will win $600, loaded directly on to their Wave & Pay cards. Prize winners will be selected at the end of March, April and May.
PATCO riders who do not yet have a Wave & Pay card can visit www.patcopilot.com/contest and complete the form to get a new card. There is no charge to get a Wave & Pay card, and no credit check is required. Once the new card is registered online, the cardholder is entered into the contest. Customers get a new chance to win every time they use their Wave & Pay cards.
PATCO riders who already have a registered Wave & Pay card can enter the contest at the same website, www.patcopilot.com/contest.
After the pilot ends, the PATCO Wave & Pay ANYWHERE Visa Prepaid Card will continue to be accepted everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted until the expiration date on the card. To follow the latest news and participate in the discussion, visit blog.PATCOpilot.com, follow the pilot on Twitter@waveNpayPATCO and Facebook.com/waveNpay. The PATCO Card is issued by The Bancorp Bank pursuant to a license from Visa U.S.A. Inc. The Bancorp Bank; Member FDIC.

NFC Technologies and Systems - 2012 - How NFC Works and Why an In-Depth Understanding of the Technology Is the Key to Unlocking Its Potential

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "NFC Technologies and Systems - 2012" report to their offering.
Get the technical insight needed to make informed decisions about NFC
At first glance, near field communication (NFC) sounds straightforward simply add a credit card to a mobile device and let consumers begin paying for things with their phones.
When it comes to putting together a business case for NFC, however, things are far less simple. It quickly becomes clear that the business potential of NFC is tightly bound up with the technical options available and that an in-depth understanding of how NFC works, at the device level and as a system, is required to understand exactly what those options are.
NFC Technologies and Systems is a new research report that explains every aspect of NFC technology. All the technical terms and industry jargon are explained in plain, clear language with numerous figures and diagrams showing you exactly what is involved at each stage and what your options are.
No technical background in mobile communications, contactless cards or NFC is required to make the most of this report even the most non-technical executive will gain the knowledge needed to make informed business decisions about this fast-emerging technology.
The tools you need to maximise ROI
You'll learn how NFC phones work, why multiple service providers can safely share space on a single secure element, what types of back office system are required and how NFC security works both in theory and in practice.
Crucially, you will also discover the technical decisions that impact most on the costs, returns and viability of an NFC project and what the options are for maximising your return on investment.
Research undertaken for this report has transformed our thinking about the kind of commercial arrangements potential NFC service providers should be making, the business models that are most likely to succeed and who is best positioned to profit from the imminent arrival of NFC.
This report forms part of The NFC Report, a major international research project that examines the business, the technology, the applications, the players and the future of the NFC market.

Consumer Confidence Continues to Rise in March, According to Discover U.S. Spending Monitor

Views on U.S. Economy and Finances Improve; Spending Intentions Rise
RIVERWOODS, Ill.--()--Consumer confidence rose again in March, spurred by brightening attitudes toward the overall economy and sustained confidence in personal finances. The Discover U.S. Spending Monitor, a 4-year-old daily poll tracking economic confidence and spending intentions of nearly 8,200 consumers throughout the month, climbed 1.6 points to 96.5. The Monitor is at its highest level since October 2007, and has jumped 19.5 points during the past six months.
In March, a quarter of respondents said their personal finances were improving, and 35 percent said that the overall economy is improving – the highest figure since April 2010. At the same time, 50 percent responded that the economy was poor, which is the lowest figure since April 2010.
Highlights of Discover U.S. Spending Monitor Results
 January February March
  2012 2012 2012
Discover U.S. Spending Monitor Index 90.5 94.9 96.5
U.S. Economy Improving 30% 32% 35%
Personal Finances Improving 23% 24% 25%

Consumer Spending Intentions Rise
Against this backdrop of improved confidence, more consumers reported plans to increase spending over the next 30 days in all categories surveyed by the Monitor. Spending intentions typically rise during this time of year as consumers anticipate higher gas prices and seasonal spending, such as home improvement purchases.
Looking forward, 34 percent plan, in general, to spend more in the upcoming month, up 6 percentage points from February.
  • Of those surveyed, 52 percent plan to spend more on household expenses, including gasoline and groceries. This is a jump of 8 percentage points from the month before, and the highest figure since May 2011. This comes amid rising gas prices.
  • Seventeen percent plan to spend more on home improvement next month, the highest figure since May 2011.
  • Also, 15 percent of consumers said they planned to spend more in the upcoming month on major personal purchases, which is the highest figure since June 2011.
At the same time, 40 percent said they expected a greater expense or shortfall in income in the next 30 days, which is a leap of 7 percentage points from the month before and may indicate added expenses as a result of higher gas prices. The number of people who said they had more money left over in March, compared to the month before, fell to 12 percent, a drop of 2 percentage points.
  • Individuals in households of income below $75,000 annually showed a greater change in confidence in the overall economy than those with higher incomes. For people in households earning between $40,000 and $75,000 annually, 36 percent said the economy is getting better, an increase of 3 percentage points from the month before. For households earning less than $40,000, that figure rose to 26 percent from 23 percent the month before.
  • In contrast, for those in households of incomes higher than $75,000, the number of people who said the economy is improving dropped to 43 percent from 46 percent.
  • In all income categories, fewer consumers report that the economy is getting worse. That figure dropped 2 percentage points to 44 percent.
More Consumers Feeling Better About Their Personal Finances
Improving views about the economy has correlated with more consumers feeling better about their personal finances.
  • Overall, 36 percent said their personal finances were either good or excellent, which is the same figure as February.
  • A quarter of respondents said their personal finances are improving, a slight increase of 1 percentage point from the month before.
For the first time in three years, a majority, 51 percent, of consumers reported having money left over after paying bills. This figure is a slight increase from February and the highest figure since March 2009.
About Discover U.S. Spending Monitor
The Discover U.S. Spending MonitorSM is a monthly index of consumer spending intentions and capacity that is based on interviews with a random sample of 8,200 U.S. adults conducted at a rate of 275 per night. In addition to spending, the survey asks consumers their opinions on the U.S. economy and their personal finances. The Monitor began in May 2007 with a base index of 100.
