NFC Mobile Devices with Fingerprint Security Protection Expected This Year

Web                      7 new results for NFC Mobile Payment

A new fingerprint sensor from Authentec is now being designed into a number of new devices so that NFC phone users can add an extra layer of protection to their mobile wallets, the company says.

Biometric sensor specialist Authentec has introduced a new fingerprint verification sensor that has been specifically designed to protect access to NFC mobile wallets — and the first phones and tablets to include the product are expected to hit the market by the end of this year.

The AES2750 builds on Authentec’s existing mobile phone fingerprint sensors, featured in a number of Japanese phones such as the Docomo Regza, built by Toshiba. The device packs a 192 by 8 pixel fingerprint sensor array and support for both multiple encryption technologies and one time password (OTP) generation. Features include a new, flat package design, with a narrow Y-dimension and rounded edges.

That means, Authentec says, it can be mounted «in narrow spaces or edges of smartphones and tablets as well as through-hole glass mounting for touchscreen-enabled mobile devices».

The AES2750 also includes the ability to interact directly with payment applications stored within an NFC secure element and provides direct NFC radio control, based on positive authentication of the user — ensuring that only the registered user of a device can gain access to the mobile wallet.

«This is a highly complementary solution to NFC m-commerce smartphones, compatible with today’s NFC and secure element subsystems to provide strong transaction security with an ease of use and convenience exceeding PIN, password or pattern-based security. Early feedback from smartphone and tablet OEMs has been very positive, particularly about sensor aesthetics and security, and we already have design wins for this ’made for mobile commerce’ sensor. Those first devices are expected later this year,» — Authentec’s Brent Dietz has told to journalists.

As well as phone and tablet makers, the company is also «engaged with mobile wallet providers, carriers and handset OEMs on NFC-related programs,» CEO Larry Ciaccia told analysts during the company’s Q1 2012 earnings call last week.

MasterCard Mobile Point-of-Sale Program Provides Guidelines to Expand Card Acceptance for Small and Micro-Businesses

May 23, 2012

MasterCard Supports the use of Mobile Payment Card Readers for Safe, Simple and Smart Payments

Purchase, N.Y., May 23, 2012– With the evolution and proliferation of mobile devices, there has been a surge of innovation in point of sale technology. MasterCard (NYSE:MA) today announced a global initiative called the MasterCard Mobile Point-of-Sale (MPOS) Program that will provide best practices to mobile point-of-sale solution providers and merchants, ensuring simple and secure transactions when consumers use their debit, credit and prepaid cards to pay merchants that use these devices.
Mobile devices are fast-becoming an integral part of people’s daily lives around the world. MasterCard has been working to transform these devices into tools of commerce that give consumers and merchants new options for how they shop, pay for goods and receive payments.
“The boom in mobile devices provides a huge opportunity for innovation across all industries – including payments,” said James Anderson, Group Head, Mobile, MasterCard Worldwide. “With nearly 6 billion mobile subscriptions around the world, there is tremendous potential to grow merchant acceptance – it’s imperative that manufacturers, vendors and merchants maintain the highest standards to enable a seamless and secure purchasing experience.”
The MasterCard MPOS Best Practices document contains guidance that solution providers and merchants should adhere to, including best practices regarding:
1. Securing MPOS Payment Applications
2. Securing Transaction Data Captured by an MPOS Card Reader Accessory
3. Securing Personal Account Numbers (PAN)
4. EMV Chip Transactions
5. Display of the MasterCard Acceptance Mark
6. Merchant Confirmation
7. Cardholder Verification Methods (CVM)
8. Receipts
“While the market for mobile phone and tablet payment acceptance is in its infancy, it has already seen explosive growth,” said Will Graylin, CEO, ROAM Data. “We’re very pleased that MasterCard is leading the efforts in providing necessary guidance to the industry for this important area that is rapidly expanding payment options for consumers and merchants.”
MasterCard estimates that by the end 2011, there were approximately 1.2 million MPOS solutions shipped to MasterCard merchants globally. Importantly, approximately 75 percent of those merchants had previously not accepted payment card transactions.  With the incredible amount of innovation and growth expected in this area, MasterCard will continue to expand the MPOS Program over the coming months.
“iZettle changes the way small businesses take payments and, over the last few months, iZettle has increased the Nordic payment card acceptance market by 10%,” highlighted Jacob de Geer, Founder and CEO, iZettle.  “We’re happy to see a major player like MasterCard pave the way for safe, simple and smart payments for a growing industry and for the merchants that use new solutions like ours.”
MPOS solution providers can assess their solutions against the MasterCard MPOS Best Practices and apply to be listed on MasterCard’s website.  Registration for this program will open in July 2012.

Cubic Customer, RMV, Tops One Million Mobile Transit Tickets Milestone in Frankfurt

Cubic’s Customer Tops One Million Mobile Transit Tickets Sold in Frankfurt

SAN DIEGO, CALIF., May 23, 2012 – Cubic Transportation Systems, a business unit of Cubic Corporation (NYSE:CUB) and a leading integrator of payment and information technology and services for intelligent travel solutions, announced that Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund GmbH (RMV), one of Europe’s largest transport associations, and a Cubic customer, has sold more than one million mobile phone transit tickets with Cubic’s smartphone app and mobile ticketing solution.

RMV oversees transit services in the Frankfurt, Germany, region, including 153 transit operators that accept tickets generated by Cubic’s app.

RMV’s “HandyTicket” service lets riders pay for and download single rides, day passes and group day passes all from their mobile phone quickly, easily and without cash. Since the introduction of Cubic’s new mobile app in October 2010 for iPhone, Android and Blackberry smart phones, the number of users has rocketed to more than 40,000.

Additionally, RMV equips its train stations and bus shelters with “ConTags” (“Kontaktpunkten” in German), usable by travelers with NFC-enabled devices that customers tap with their smartphones to enter the transit system and automatically enter their starting location. The destination is selected from the RMV ticketing screen on the phone and the ticket is charged to the customer’s bank card associated with his or her RMV account. A 2-D barcode ticket – similar to an airline boarding pass – is transmitted to the phone and can be verified by an inspector upon request.

“We’re pleased to see the strong uptake of our mobile ticketing solution, clear proof that transit customers find it very convenient and easy to use,” said Stefan Jacobs, managing director for Cubic Transportation Systems (Deutschland) GmbH. “We are looking forward to continuing our work with RMV, constantly striving to improve applications and to develop new ones, always with the aim of making life simpler for many thousands of travelers.”

Increasing consumer trust and awareness key for widespread uptake of NFC mobile payments

To learn more about padloc, request info here.

(PRWEB UK) 23 May 2012

Increasing consumer awareness and building trust around contactless mobile payments will be key if providers and brands expect to see the widespread adoption of NFC technology in 2012 as predicted.

The very first Mobile Payment Index study from eDigitalResearch also found that almost 9 out of 10 (89%) previous users of contactless mobile payments are likely to use the technology again in the near future, demonstrating the potential that NFC could offer retailers, brands and providers.

The survey also found that, of those that have the NFC technology enabled of their smartphone device, an encouraging 47% have already used it to make a purchase. Early adopters, predominately young males, are using the technology to purchase smaller to medium sized items.

However, the results also highlight the distinct lack of general consumer awareness surrounding contactless mobile payments. Of the 2,000 consumers surveyed, 33% said that they had not heard of the technology before. Trust in the technology is also incredibly low, with over one third (35%) saying that they wouldn’t use contactless mobile payments because of concerns over security and fraud.

Derek Eccleston, Head of Research at eDigitalResearch, comments, “It’s not surprising that we’re seeing this sort of wariness from consumers. Unlike mCommerce, where consumers were driving the change and shopping online via their mobiles well before the first shopping apps, this time around it’s up to retailers and technology providers to push for this next revolution of the market. People need to work together to increase consumer awareness, and in turn, settle fears and tackle key issues, such as security”.
The study also found that, over the next year, 27% of smartphone owners surveyed are likely to use contactless mobile payments more. It’s important, however, that mobile firms, technology providers and retailers work to increase consumer awareness and convert this segment of consumers into contactless mobile payment users.
