CARTES 2012: The electronic wallet -- at the heart of the mobile payment challenge

PRESS RELEASE
May 30, 2012, 1:47 p.m. EDT
PARIS, May 30, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- The major players in the payment sector, where mobility already represents a key strategic approach, have made the electronic wallet their chief issue. The initiatives launched over the past few months confirm the rapid growth of the e-wallet and are a sign of numerous changes in not only consumption modes for users, but also technologies and the sector for companies now working in the realm of payment. The CARTES trade show (whose main theme for 2012 is mobile payment) will be focusing on recent developments in the e-wallet and its future prospects. Who are these players, and what initiatives have already been launched? How can the adoption of the e-wallet be speeded up? And in terms of security and personal protection, what developments are there as regards solutions to reassure users?
The e-wallet Big-Bang is under way
All the key players in payment, including MasterCard, Visa Europe, Western Union and Paypal, now have their own Wallets. "It all began in 2011 with the ISIS Mobile Wallet and the Google NFC Wallet. This latest announcement was a real detonator, marking the start of the e-wallet era and triggering off the wallet war we are now seeing," says Isabelle Alfano, Director of the CARTES show.
It's true that there have been numerous initiatives in this field over the past year. To convince not only consumers but also retailers to use the phone, PC or tablet as a method of payment, the many players now active in the payment sector (banks and payment establishments, telecommunication operators, distributors, etc.) have become aware that it is absolutely crucial to provide innovative functions and a simple, secure tool.
Which functions foster the use of the e-wallet?
According to David Marcus, the new president of Paypal, "Shopping is fun, but paying is not." To spread the use of the e-wallet, the first aim is thus to transform payment into shopping by proposing new services to consumers: price comparers, alerts about discounts and special offers, options for recharging phone SIM cards, buying train tickets, etc. To improve the user experience even further, the Paypal wallet services make it possible to assign types of expenditure or payments to certain accounts or payment cards (credit, pre-paid, debit, and so on).
These electronic wallets now store data from bank cards and loyalty cards, whose advantages they can manage automatically, together with information about deliveries. "The development of the e-wallet has only just begun. In the future, it will probably be able to store other personal data, like ID cards, medical information and health cards," says Isabelle Alfano.
Security and the protection of private life: issues and opportunities
Current developments (the deployment of e-wallets and these new functions) obviously raise numerous questions in terms of security and private life.
This is because the dematerialisation of payment cards or their hosting in a SIM-NFC card or secure component of the phone (in the case of mobile payment) makes it necessary to rethink security architectures not only in mobile objects (cell phones, PCs and tablets) but also in servers that are now cloud-hosted. Conventional payment players will thus need to reformulate their requirements concerning risk management, and reconsider their economic models.
"One of the problems that banks have to solve comes from the fact that they now need to control payment transactions in objects they no longer control," said the representative of a major French card manufacturer at the World Card Summit in the last CARTES show.
Security and data protection are crucial challenges to be met in gaining users' confidence and thus accelerating the adoption of these new means of payment by consumers and retailers. For the smart security industry, these questions are not so much challenges as new opportunities: a number of technological responses are already appearing, which associate security with personal data protection in e-wallets. Recent developments in solutions thus combine on-board security in mobile objects with trusted services provided by TSM (Trusted Service Managers). Others propose the fine-tuning of TEE (Trusted Executive Environment) security zones to execute the orders of certain sensitive applications in the mobile operating system.
With the increasing use of smartphones and tablets, the e-wallet will gradually become more widespread in our daily purchases. Numerous developments need to be envisaged, and a number of questions still have to be addressed, mainly regarding security and personal data protection.
All the key players in mobile payment (banks, telecommunication operators, distributors, etc.) will be present at the CARTES 2012 trade show (6 to 8 November 2012 at Paris-Nord-Villepinte) to reply to these questions and present the latest innovations in terms of payment and security technologies.
Isabelle Alfano, the Director of the CARTES show, will be happy to answer any questions you may have about mobile payment, the e-wallet, the stakes at issue and market opportunities.
To follow the latest news about the Show in real time, we invite you to:

NFC Success Depends on Realizing Potential Beyond Payments, Industry Experts Agree as NFC Solutions Summit 2012 Wraps

PRESS RELEASE
May 30, 2012, 8:31 a.m. EDT

Smart Card Alliance Mobile and NFC Council Officers Announced

PRINCETON JUNCTION, NJ, May 30, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- The success of NFC technology will depend on the availability of a wide array of consumer-satisfying payment and non-payment applications in areas like healthcare, government, enterprise and retail, industry experts agreed as the NFC Solutions Summit 2012 wrapped last week. More than 430 attendees gathered for the Summit, the first NFC-themed event held jointly by the Smart Card Alliance and NFC Forum, at the Hyatt Regency San Francisco Airport hotel.
"The Smart Card Alliance, with its diverse membership and educational focus, is uniquely positioned to stimulate productive discussions and debates of the critical issues surrounding NFC adoption. This was illustrated well by the packed auditoriums for the spirited and engaging sessions featuring NFC technology and business stakeholders, and the large number of attendees for the two pre-conference workshops and the in-person Mobile and NFC Council meeting," said Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance.
On Wednesday and Thursday, attendees gathered for concurrent sessions on technology, hardware and applications, and business services.
Guy Berg, senior managing consultant for MasterCard Advisors, gave attendees more insight into MasterCard's commitment to assuring a good customer experience when using NFC technology because "if you tap it and it doesn't work, how likely are you to come back and use it again?" To that end, MasterCard has established a number of approval processes for handsets, secure elements, wallet user interfaces, and Trusted Services Managers (TSMs), and Berg announced a significant number of approvals that have been granted in all areas.
Tony Sabetti, director of POS and Payment Alliances at Isis Mobile Commerce, said that Isis, the mobile wallet venture created by AT&T Mobility, T-Mobile USA and Verizon Wireless, aims to change "the way people shop, pay and save." Sabetti said that Isis is "looking forward to bringing this out to consumers later this summer," with pilots in Salt Lake City, Utah and Austin, Texas. Hundreds of merchant locations including national merchants Aeropostale, The Coca-Cola Company, Champs, Dillard's, Foot Locker, Jamba Juice and Macy's are set to accept contactless payments made with the Isis Mobile Wallet for the pilots.
NFC is not just about finance, but "about the integration of finance, retail, health, government," Doug Morgan, the chief strategy officer at C-SAM told attendees. Along that theme, the audience heard presentations on the many non-payment opportunities for NFC.
Deb Spitler, vice president of HID Connect, HID Corporation, said that NFC will change physical access control, presenting opportunities for a new "ecosystem of devices that will read digital keys" for physical access to buildings. Julian Lovelock, senior director, product marketing ActivIdentity, talked of ways that NFC and the secure element can help to solve the challenges of "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD) in the enterprise, saying the technology can allow corporate-specific applications to be put into a "container," separate and secure from all of the other applications on the handset.
Transit will be a "significant early driver" for NFC, David deKozan, vice president, Cubic Transportation Systems told the audience on Wednesday. Cubic has already run a series of trials and focus groups for NFC technology and, according to deKozan, the customer reactions have been very positive and "they can't wait to get it."
Peter Watkins, an executive director in the Office of the Chief Information Officer with the Government of British Columbia, talked of another innovative non-payment use of NFC: government and citizen services. Watkins said his government finds it "imperative that we make ourselves compatible with the global trends," putting in place a system that can use NFC technology in the future. He outlined the Government of British Columbia's efforts to revamp their public healthcare system to a more secure and privacy-friendly one utilizing contactless chip card technology. Under the new system, citizens will be vetted when renewing their driver's licenses, and given the option to combine both cards into one.
Research in Motion's (RIM's) senior director of mobile wallet, Frank Maduri said that RIM is "very bullish on NFC" and is "going to put NFC on all user devices." The reason, according to Maduri, is NFC's "powerful yet very simple user interface." While he said that payment, loyalty and coupons will likely be the first applications to take off for NFC, he sees big opportunities for the technology in both the consumer space and the enterprise space. Maduri said that putting emphasis on the NFC applications that can be done very simply now, such as "basic pairing and sharing," and tag reading and writing, could result in early adoption of these applications by consumers.
Koichi Tagawa, chair of the NFC Forum, and the general manager of Global Standards and Industry Relations Department at Sony, updated the audience on NFC Forum activities. With 170 member companies and 17 NFC specifications in place, the NFC Forum will continue to work to enhance the specifications, educate the market, and certify products through its certification program. Rules to use the N-Mark, a stylized letter "N" trademark intended for consumers to easily identify NFC-enabled products as well as the locations where NFC services are available, have been recently revised, and now the mark can be used on smart posters, on devices, and on software. All of this activity, according to Tagawa is to "optimize NFC for all potential use cases" and to enable "applications that will satisfy as many consumers as possible."
On Thursday, the Alliance hosted "NFC OPEN Unconference Day," an innovative open conference format. A facilitator enlisted attendees to propose self-organizing sessions and presentations in areas dealing with NFC technology and business adoption issues and opportunities. Some of the engaging topics on Thursday included:

-- How Does NSTIC Play with NFC?
-- Cloud and How it Affects Mobile & NFC
-- Wallet (Pros & Cons) for a Consumer
-- NFC Use Case for Healthcare -- Best Ideas and Best Models
-- Consumer Perspectives of NFC (Security)
        -- NFC Implementation Strategies

Notes from the Unconference Day are available on the event wiki at http://www.smartcardalliance.org/nfcopen/index.php/Main_Page .
Also during the Summit, the Smart Card Alliance announced the officers of the newly-formed Mobile and NFC Council. The Council -- which has attracted over 60 organizations and more than 120 individuals to date -- will take a broad industry view and bring together stakeholders in the different vertical markets that can benefit from mobile and NFC applications including payments, loyalty, marketing, promotion/coupons/offers, peer-to-peer, identity, access control and transit applications. These officers will lead the Council in raising awareness and accelerating the adoption of the numerous applications possible with NFC technology:

-- Chair: Brent Bowen, vice president, business development, INSIDE
            Secure
-- Vice Chair: Chandra Srivastava, business leader, Visa Inc.
-- Secretary: Doug Morgan, chief strategy officer, C-SAM

Great Infographic: How NFC Will Be Involved in Your Life

As this infographic shows, NFC is much more than simply payments.  If it's about any ONE thing, it's really all about authentication at the end of the day.  Access to work, the gym, your car, your cards, etc.  The end-all game is "authentication."

Expert Panel Explores Latest Authentication Innovations at NACHA’s Internet Council Meeting

Authentify CEO Peter Tapling moderates session

CHICAGO, May 30, 2012 – Authentication has become a critical component of digital commerce and grown in stature as the subject of updated Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (FFIEC) guidelines.

Peter Tapling, CEO of Authentify, a global leader in telephone-based out-of-band authentication, and a panel of industry experts will bring to light the latest innovative uses of authentication technology in the fight against online payment and transaction fraud in a panel discussion at NACHA’s Internet Council meeting. The event, “Re-calibrating Your Expectations in the New ‘Real-World’ of Payments,” is being held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin June 6 - 7, 2012.

Tapling will be joined by Andy Foote, vice president at Wells Fargo; Courtney Golden, senior manager of product management at eTrade; Mike Mulholand, director of fraud solutions strategy at Memento; and Joe Triano, principal of Joseph Triano Consulting.

The panel, “Leveraging Authentication Technologies to Protect Payments and Transactions,” will be presented on Wednesday, June 6th from 10:30-12:00 p.m.  The ecommerce and banking security experts will discuss balancing the use of various authentication approaches in light of customer experience and risk management goals.  They also will be discussing the myriad of options for authentication technology in the context of financial services and payment.

“Because cybercriminals continue to become more sophisticated and organized, innovation in authentication solutions must evolve at a rapid pace,” said Tapling.  “During the panel we will be exploring how leaders in ecommerce and banking are tackling fraud by applying the latest advances in authentication technologies.  The panelists represent large banks, small banks, service providers and industry experts.  I expect the different points of view will be illuminating.”

One important theme will be how to use mobile devices to get consumers more directly involved in monitoring their own accounts. This imperative was underscored by a recent survey showing that banks report their customers find fraud 82 percent of the time before the bank has even detected it. The panel will be discussing how a convenient always-on app on a smartphone or PC, such as Authentify’s new 2CHK app, enables the legitimate account owner to review and approve, or more importantly cancel if needed, transactions that are about to be processed against their accounts.

Authentify introduced telephone-based OOB authentication to the market and today has the most industry experience and expertise in deploying solutions and providing services. A proven and effective countermeasure recommended by federal authorities, regulators and leading consulting firms, OOB authentication is used by banks and ecommerce providers to protect against man-in-the-browser attacks designed to steal login credentials or hijack online sessions.  The capability to add OOB safeguards within multiple layer security models fulfills industry best practices as recommended by the FFIEC, Gartner Research, Inc., the FBI, the U.S. Secret Service and NACHA.

Under the leadership of Susan Pandy, senior director for Internet and ecommerce at NACHA, the Internet Council works to advance electronic commerce over open networks by enabling digital business in a straight forward, secure and cost-effective manner.  For more information on the Internet Council, the June 6 - 7 meeting in Milwaukee and future meetings visit so make sure you take Bailey out to a new business because of what was it he said he https://tic.nacha.org/.
