A mobile wallet with a twist of Lemon
Mobile Payments Today
Lemon, a provider of a mobile money management app, is hitting the market with its own version of a mobile wallet product called The Smarter Wallet. And it's raised a sizeable wad of cash to stick in it.
Lemon said it has raised $8 million in Series A funding that it will use for the launch and future expansion of its new product. The round was led by Maveron, the VC firm whose co-founders include Starbucks' CEO Howard Schultz. The round also included Lightspeed Venture Partners, Draper Fisher Jervetson and CampVentures as well.
"This initial funding and the launch of the Smarter Wallet are major milestones in furthering our vision for Lemon as a trusted mobile money management solution," said Lemon Founder and CEO Wences Casares. "This powerful new wallet framework, combined with our transaction management tools, empowersYe users to take total control over their finances with a fresh new perspective."
A mobile wallet with a twist
Casares was co-founder of early mobile payment start-up Bling Nation, a product that used NFC stickers attached to handsets to enable payment at the point of sale. Bling Nation received considerable attention when it first launched in 2010, but its fortunes soured and it closed its doors last year.

Phoenix PaySecure Goes Live in the UK with Underbelly

Underbelly (venue)
Underbelly (venue) (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

For Immediate Release

PHOENIX PAYSECURE GOES LIVE IN THE UK WITH UNDERBELLY

London 12 June 2012; Phoenix Managed Networks’ (Phoenix) PaySecure has deployed its ground breaking payments security solution in the UK for the first time with Underbelly.

Underbelly, the leading live entertainment company, has now fully integrated PaySecure at its site on the London’s Southbank, and throughout the multi-year agreement will use the payments solution at the Edinburgh Fringe festival as well.

Alan Stephenson-Brown, Director of Europe for Phoenix, commented: “Following our strategic deal with Mako networks in February 2012 I am thrilled how PaySecure has been received in the UK. Phoenix PaySecure is a complete, robust, PCI compliant data security system from the payment terminal to bank authorisation.  It provides a versatile and fully secure retail network for payments and ticketing. Not only does it supply a secure transaction network but it also goes one step further by providing on-site network security which makes it easy for merchants to work in a continually PCI compliant environment.”

Previously Underbelly’s set-up was supplied by multiple vendors which staff had to manage. Now Underbelly has a point of contact with its acquiring bank and a point of contact with Phoenix for security, transactions transport and a cloud managed service (CMS). This is much simpler for Underbelly.

Alan Stephenson-Brown added: “Phoenix PaySecure incorporates the industry’s first ever PCI firewall which makes it much easier for merchants like Underbelly to achieve compliance. By integrating PaySecure we have supplied Underbelly with a state-of-the-art, consolidated PCI compliant network that supports and protects the whole of the business.”

It starts at merchant locations, where the PaySecure firewall/router locks down payment networks to PCI DSS criteria and provides a primary connection to the internet. Each cloud-managed network appliance provides on-site network security, while the central managed system is used to configure and apply continuous compliance monitoring tools and safeguards.

Whilst Phoenix offers internet connectivity, PaySecure works over any IP connection regardless of the provider. Underbelly uses two IP connections, PaySecure protects both of them; one supplied by Phoenix and the other already in place at the South Bank. The flexibility and speed of the network and the lack of downtime has enabled Underbelly to increase the number of payment terminals to meet demand safely.

Sarah Fleming, Operations Manager at Underbelly, said: “Before moving to Phoenix PaySecure, we had to speak to a number of different vendors to ensure we had a safe and secure network on a slow old fashioned dial-up solution. PaySecure has allowed us to migrate to a faster IP system which guarantees security for ourselves and our customers. The fact that this goes beyond payments into other sections of the business, such as ticketing, is fantastic. We are delighted PaySecure is able to support our unique company needs.”

About Phoenix Managed Networks

Phoenix Managed Networks is a global provider of payments communications, gateway and payment support services, delivering a state-of-the-art, reliable and cost effective solutions connecting retailers with the world's banks, acquirers and processors. Founded in January 2010 with its global headquarters located in Reston, Va., Phoenix has been highly successful in advocating a combination of quality, innovation and uncompromising customer care.

About PaySecure

PaySecure is a solution designed to simplify payment security and compliance for merchants or the ISO’s who supply their transaction services, with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS).
No other security vendor can provide the same level of security without the merchant incurring significant up-front and on-going IT costs. This solution takes the hard work away from merchants and allows ISO’s to offer an even stronger suite of transaction networking to its merchant clients. This in turn allows merchants to focus on their core business.

Will Apple Bite PayPal With it's 400 Million Payment Accounts

Apple CEO Tim Cook just revealed that the company has 400 million active accounts with credit cards registered for its online stores—in other words, iTunes and the App Store.  That's more than PayPal, which has 110 million active accounts (out of 232 million total), and Amazon.com, which reports having 152 million customer accounts.  Bottom line: When it comes to mobile payments for anything made up of bits, Apple has a huge advantage in its giant pool of customers and the ease with which they can pay.

TIO Introduces TIO MobilePay

TIO Launches First Mobile App to Pay Multiple Bills via Debit and Credit Cards in Real Time

NEW YORK--()--TIO Networks Corp., (TSX-V: TNC) ("TIO"), North America's expedited bill payment company, today announced the launch of TIO MobilePay, the first mobile app that allows Americans to pay multiple bills via VISA or MasterCard branded payment cards in real time. iPhone, iPad and Android users can choose to pay more than 6,000 billers via, credit or debit card with the option of same day processing.
Another attractive feature of TIO MobilePay is the option to make emergency payments that are processed in real time. A recent survey conducted by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling found 58 million U.S. adults paid their bills late. Consumers spent a staggering $20 billion in credit card bill late fees in 2009, according to the survey.“The demand for mobile bill payment is rapidly increasing as is the need to pay multiple bills in one place from any bank,” said Hamed Shahbazi, Chairman and CEO of TIO Networks. “Paying bills by credit card is also attractive to both reward seekers and consumers who need that bridge in between pay checks.”
“The constrained economy has greatly increased the need for emergency bill pay solutions,” said Shahbazi. “Consumers are expected to save billions in late fees over the next few years due to expedited bill payment services like TIO MobilePay.
Expedited bill payments with credit cards are particularly important to the 60 million Americans who are underbanked, meaning they have limited access to mainstream financial services. These Americans face costly repercussions such as high reconnection and interest fees when they’re unable to pay bills on time.
TIO MobilePay is powered by TIO Wallet and is the first of a suite of unified cloud-based products for America’s underbanked population that will launch later this year. TIO MobilePay enables consumers to not only pay their bills, but also schedule bill payments to ensure payments are made on time. In subsequent product releases, consumers will be able to load cash into their TIO Wallet from thousands of TIO's walk-up cash pay locations, and use those funds to not only pay bills, but also transfer funds and make purchases. For more information visit: www.tiomobilepay.com or www.tionetworks.com. Join the conversation at www.twitter.com/TIOWallet or onwww.facebook.com/TIOWallet.

TIO Wallet is the premiere payment wallet for the underserved. It is designed to serve the estimated 60 million Americans with limited access to mainstream financial services.
