MasterCard Worldwide Ranks No. 31 on The 2011 DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity® List

PURCHASE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MasterCard Worldwide is ranked among the top companies for diversity according to The 2011 DiversityInc Top 50 Companies for Diversity list. Of the 535 companies who participated this year, MasterCard ranked No.31. This is the second time in recent years that MasterCard has made this prestigious list – up 10 spots from its 2009 ranking at No.41.
Globally MasterCard has 12 regional employee-resource groups, which play an important role in the promotion of its diversity and inclusion efforts. These company-funded groups are used for recruitment, talent development, on-boarding of new employees and mentoring. In addition, MasterCard recently held its third annual Multicultural Summit.

This event is aimed at realizing MasterCard’s diverse perspectives and way to demonstrate its ongoing commitment to maintaining a diverse and inclusive culture. It is also used to identify ways to drive business growth and innovation.“MasterCard’s ability to innovate and provide payment solutions that make life easier for consumers all over the world is a direct result of the quality of our people and the diverse perspectives they bring to the table. We need to have a workforce that is as diverse and inclusive as the millions of consumers and geographies we serve. That commitment starts at the top and it’s what defines us as a truly global company,” said Donna Johnson, MasterCard chief diversity officer. “We are very proud at MasterCard that over these past few years we have been able to move the needle on diversity from beyond a conversation to a real point of impact.”
"Our metrics-driven, objective editorial process enables us to measure a company's cultural ability to relate to employees, customers, community and suppliers,” said DiversityInc CEO Luke Visconti. “There is a direct correlation between best practices in diversity management and human-capital results, but we feel our list is really about measuring a company's cultural ability to relate to a rapidly developing marketplace—not only in composition, but in its ability to immediately reward companies that have demonstrated respect." Visconti added, “MasterCard has demonstrated success in their approach and we are happy to welcome back a much-improved MasterCard to the DiversityInc Top 50 list.”
DiversityInc was founded in 1998 and is a metrics-based source of information on diversity management data, trends and best practices. Small Business Owners, Rep. Welch Brave Storms to Protect Swipe Fee Reform!

Reforms passed by Congress last year must be properly implemented in light of Wall Street push to weaken reform
WASHINGTON, March 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More than 100 small business owners from across the country descended upon Washington, D.C. today where they braved severe weather conditions to participate in a rally outside the U.S. Capitol to urge Congress and the Federal Reserve to protect commonsense swipe fee reform – then marched to Capitol Hill to conduct face-to-face meetings. Last year, Congress passed and the president signed into law important bipartisan reforms to rein in excessive swipe fees. Now, as the Federal Reserve (the Fed) works to establish rules guiding implementation, the big banks and credit card companies are lobbying to weaken reform in a last ditch effort to retain their perks and profits – but Main Street continues to fight the good fight.
"Last year Congress passed common sense legislation to protect small businesses and consumers from the fees charged by big banks and credit card companies on debit card purchases," Senator Durbin (D-IL) said. "I'll continue to stand with small business owners as we fight Wall Street's desperate attempts to block reforms from going into effect."
"After the epic overreach by the big banks and credit card companies, Congress enacted legislation that put a cop on the beat," Congressman Welch said. "We made sure that no longer would big banks be able to charge the highest fees in the world and rack up billions of dollars in profits on the backs of small businesses and consumers. I am confident that the same movement that brought reform will beat back the efforts of big banks and credit card companies to hold on to their profits and weaken the law."
For small business owners across the country, properly implementing these reforms means an opportunity to grow their businesses, offer better pay to employees, and pass savings on to their customers. As the Fed works to establish rules to determine how the reforms will be implemented, these small business owners hope the original intent of the law prevails. For big banks and credit card companies, however, implementing these reasonable reforms as passed by Congress means no longer enjoying the sky-high profits and sensational perks that they have enjoyed throughout years of out of control fees.
"The rain isn't stopping today, and either are we... we've come too far in this fight to let a little rain stop us," said National spokesman for Reform Swipe Fees NOW! and 7-Eleven franchise owner, Dennis Lane. Year after year I have seen these fees continue to rise and prevent guys like me from lowering prices, expanding business or strengthening a local economy. Well enough is enough! We have got to protect the reforms that Congress passed."
"The original intent of the reforms as passed was to enable a system in which debit swipe fees are reasonable and proportional to the processing costs incurred," said NACS president and CEO Hank Armour. "We cannot allow Visa, MasterCard and the world's biggest banks to spend millions of lobbying dollars to weaken reform and protect their multi-billion-dollar cash cow that delivers no commensurate benefits to retailers or consumers.
Today's rally came just a week after lobbyists with the Credit Union National Association traveled to D.C. to urge the Fed to weaken reform and a week before the American Bankers Association is scheduled to deploy their high-paid lobbyists to encourage the same.

Consumers Have Role in Future of Internet PIN Debit Payments

iPINdebit.com, ePINdebit.com, e-PINdebit.com and PINdebit.mobi

Here are some excerpts from an article written by Will Hernandez for American Banker where he takes a closer look at Internet PIN Debit.  To read the entire article, click here.

Future of Web PIN Payments Still Rests with Consumers

By Will Hernandez, American Banker

More electronic funds transfer networks are supporting Internet PIN payments to capture transactions otherwise lost to alternative payment methods that use the automated clearing house system for settlement.

Merchants should be eager to accept PIN debit transactions online to reduce transaction costs, thanks to lower interchange rates and decreased chargeback risk, executives from companies offering these products said.  At least one independent sales organization said it believes Internet PIN debit already has helped it gain business it would have lost to competitors.  However, the determining factor for consumers might rest with their comfort in entering PIN codes in an environment other than at the point of sale or an automated teller machine.
Acculynk Inc.'s PaySecure service has sprinted to the front of the pack in the race to determine which product gains universal acceptance among consumers and merchants.  Nine EFT networks support PaySecure — Accel/Exchange, Alaska Option, Credit Union 24, Maestro, NetWorks, NYCE, Pulse and Shazam. A thousand merchants accept PaySecure transactions.

MasterCard/Maestro Goes with Acculynk
Acculynk enables consumers to use PIN debit cards to make purchases online by integrating its PaySecure software into a merchant's online checkout system. Cardholders enter their four or six digit PINs into a virtual PIN pad that appears on-screen.

RATES VARY

Card-not-present signature debit rates set by Visa Inc. and MasterCard Inc. typically range from 1.64% to 2.2% of the sale, depending on the type of transaction, according to Acculynk. The final price to the merchant for PaySecure typically is 20% to 40% lower than what they would pay for card-not-present signature debit, Acculynk has said in the past.

The EFT networks set the PIN debit interchange rates, which determine how much the issuer receives from the merchant's bank for the transaction.

The acquiring bank then passes the expense along to the retailer as part of the discount rate, which also covers costs for processing and other services, including those provided by the supplier of the PIN debit payment service.

THE ISO ADVANTAGE
In April, Acculynk launched an ISO reseller program to enable companies to sell signature and Internet PIN debit processing as a package and to pursue the card-not-present and Internet merchant markets strategically, said Nandan Sheth, Acculynk's president.

The Atlanta company's expanded product, PaySecure Plus, includes credit and debit card processing and Internet PIN debit transaction processing.

Elavon Inc., an Atlanta processor owned by U.S. Bancorp, is providing card processing services for Acculynk, Sheth said.

JetPay LLC of Dallas is one of the few merchant services providers to publicly promote itself as a PaySecure supporter. JetPay has offered PaySecure to merchants since September and determined that the product gives the company an advantage in the marketplace, claims its chairman, Trent Voigt. JetPay mostly deals with Internet-based businesses.

Internet PIN debit's allure forced one merchant to rethink a commitment it was about to make with a bigger transaction processor that did not offer PaySecure, Voigt said. JetPay also is a processor.

"Some accounts we didn't win because we weren't the bigger company," Voigt said. "Now we can go back to those accounts, ask them if they want to do [Internet] PIN debit and process those transactions."

EFT network executives seem to be comfortable with PaySecure, and some networks have been testing the product for more than a year.

Last year, Fiserv Inc.'s Accel/Exchange became the first to roll out the service.

"We like this model because it doesn't cut out the bank," said Michael Kelly, the general manager of Accel/Exchange. "There are a couple of other networks that have aligned with PayPal, but we don't think that is the right model."

Signature Debit might have higher fraud, but it also makes more money for the banks
so they push it over the more secure PIN Debit.  Many feel that's about to change.
In April 2009, Javelin conducted a survey that found 80% of participants would use PaySecure if a trusted merchant presented it as a checkout option.  Javelin surveyed 500 signature debit card users who had made online purchases in the previous year.  Survey participants used PaySecure for a mock online purchase and then answered questions about their experience using the product.

One aspect Internet PIN debit technology has in its favor is that consumers already are familiar with the transaction process, said Dan Kramer, Shazam's senior vice president of marketing and merchant services.

Credit Services Industry Posting Surprising Profits

The Bedford Report Provides Analyst Research on MasterCard & Capital One

NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - October 25, 2010) -  Investors have been watching the Credit Services Industry very closely this earnings season as companies have been adjusting to new regulatory laws. Legislation has restricted fees garnered by transactions when consumers use their cards for purchases. With consumers borrowing less and new legislation poised to negatively affect the credit card industry, companies have had to develop new revenue drivers. Then earlier this month, the Justice Department threw another set of hurdles at the industry. The Bedford Report examines the outlook for companies in the Credit Services Industry and provides research reports on MasterCard, Inc. (NYSE: MA) and Capital One Financial Corp. (NYSE: COF). Access to the full company reports can be found at:
Earlier in the month, the Justice Department filed suit against Visa, MasterCard and American Express, accusing them of violating antitrust laws. Visa and MasterCard agreed to settle, and will let merchants offer discounts to consumers who use cheaper types of credit or debit cards. Unbeknownst to many card holders, the fees that merchants must pay to processing networks can vary depending on the type of card being used. The Department of Justice claims that the credit card processors' practice of preventing merchants from giving discounts to customers who use smaller fee cards is an anti-competitive manoeuvre.
The Bedford Report releases regular market updates on the Credit Services Industry so investors can stay ahead of the crowd and make the best investment decisions to maximize their returns. The company claimed that a decline in U.S. credit-card delinquencies helped boost profits.

Citi on Card Networks (V)/MA); PIN Debit Risk Post Durbin; Sensitivity Analysis & Perspective

Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) Logo

Citigroup (NYSE:C) on MasterCard (NYSE:MA) and VISA (NYSE:V)
Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:C) analyst took a moment to talk about Card Networks such as MasterCard, and VISA according to a StreetInsider.com report.
Citigroup analyst stated, “In a surprise move, the final Durbin language included a provision ending exclusivity for PIN debit networks. In simple terms, V/MA PIN debit cards will be required to include at least a second network bug (i.e. regional PIN networks such as STAR & Pulse) and merchants will be permitted to direct the routing of the debit transaction to their preferred payment network.”
“V Has More Risk Than MA, But Manageable Overall — V has a 35-40% market share in U.S. PIN debit versus MA’s roughly 10%. We estimate that 60-70% of V’s debit cards are exclusive (meaning no other network bug) compared to our est for MA of 40-50% (co’s do not disclose exclusivity). To us, exclusive cards are the source of potential risk. In a worst-case scenario on lost trans volume, we estimate that only 0.8% of full year EPS is at risk for V and 0.3% for MA. Our worst-case assumes that 20% of exclusive cards get routed away.”
“Overall, we see the PIN debit exclusivity as more of a stock issue than a meaningful earnings risk. This issue does create an overhang on the stocks until the Fed provides guidance, which may take 9 months or more. V/MA valuations are getting more attractive (V 16x our ’11 estimate, MA 14x) but we don’t see multiple expansion until we get visibility from the Fed, despite improved global spend. We would be buyers of American Express (NYSE: AXP) (12.5x) to capture the spend catalysts and strip out debit / Durbin risk. Separately, Discover (NYSE: DFS) (via Pulse) could benefit.”
Shares of Citigroup Inc. stock last opened at for trading at 3.95 and closed at 3.89.  MasterCard last opened at 221.26 and closed the day out at 219.85.  VISA opened at 78.96 before closed down to 77.76.  American Express opened at 41.99 and closed positive for the day at 42.17, while Discover opened at 13.84 before closing up at $14.01 to end trading.

NRF Radio Ads Ask Congress to Keep Swipe Fee Amendment in Financial Reform Bill

First 4 digits of a credit cardImage via Wikipedia

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The National Retail Federation today launched a radio campaign urging the House and Senate to keep an amendment seeking reasonable swipe fees for debit card transactions in financial services reform legislation expected to be finalized next week.
“But big banks and credit card CEOs are doing everything they can to keep collecting their swipe fees.”
“With big banks and the credit card industry pushing hard to strip this important consumer protection out of the financial services reform bill, we want to make sure that members of Congress realize how angry small businesses and their customers are about these fees,” NRF Senior Vice President for Government Relations Steve Pfister said. “These fees are driving up costs for consumers at a time when our economy is still recovering. Taxpayers have already paid for one bailout of the banking industry. Consumers shouldn’t be asked to bail out the banks and the card industry again, but that’s what would happen if this amendment is killed.”
The 60-second spots are running in the home districts of key members of the House-Senate conference committee currently negotiating a final version of the Restoring American Financial Stability Act. The panel is expected to complete its work next week, followed by final votes in the House and Senate the following week in order to get the bill on President Obama’s desk by July 4.
The ads open with a husband and wife reading a newspaper article about another bailout of the banking industry, noting that swipe fees cost consumers more than $400 a year.
Husband: “A swipe fee for using my bank debit card? I thought it was like using a check or cash.” Wife: “Using a debit card costs 43 times more than using a check.” Husband: “They’re taking billions. And nobody is doing a thing about it.”
“Congress is trying to do something about unfair hidden swipe fees,” an announcer says. “But big banks and credit card CEOs are doing everything they can to keep collecting their swipe fees.”
The commercial urges listeners to contact their members of Congress and urge them to “fix the debit card swipe fee” and “stop the bailout.”
Swipe fees – officially known as interchange fees – are a percentage of the transaction charged by card company banks each time a card is swiped to pay for a transaction. The fees average between 1 and 2 percent for debit cards and 2 percent or more for credit cards. Overall swipe fees charged to retailers and other business by Visa and MasterCard banks totaled $48 billion in 2008 and resulted in higher prices estimated at $427 for the average household. Debit swipe fees alone amount to about $20 billion of the annual total.
The Senate version of the financial services reform bill includes an amendment sponsored by Majority Whip Richard Durbin, D-Ill., that would require the Federal Reserve to set regulations that would result in “reasonable and proportional” swipe fees for debit cards that take into account banks’ actual costs for processing the transactions and the fact that paper checks drawn on the came accounts are paid at face value. The amendment would also make it easier for merchants to offer discounts or other benefits for customers who don’t use credit cards, and to set minimum purchase amounts for credit cards.
As the world's largest retail trade association and the voice of retail worldwide, NRF's global membership includes retailers of all sizes, formats and channels of distribution as well as chain restaurants and industry partners from the United States and more than 45 countries abroad. In the United States, NRF represents the breadth and diversity of an industry with more than 1.6 million American companies that employ nearly 25 million workers and generated 2009 sales of $2.3 trillion. www.nrf.com

Hearing Shows Credit and Debit Swipe Fees Cost Federal Government and Taxpayers $116 Million

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The National Retail Federation said a Senate hearing today on the $116 million in credit and debit card swipe fees paid annually by the federal government is further evidence of the need to bring card fees under control.

“These numbers show that not even the federal government is immune from the credit card industry’s power to skim profits off the top of every transaction that takes place on plastic”
“These numbers show that not even the federal government is immune from the credit card industry’s power to skim profits off the top of every transaction that takes place on plastic,” NRF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Mallory Duncan said. “The swipe fees that the card industry imposes on private industry retailers and their customers are bad enough. But swipe fees charged to the government are ultimately paid by taxpayers, even those who don’t hold a credit card. That means swipe fees are not only driving up prices for consumers but driving up taxes as well.”
“There’s a clear parallel here where the card industry sees retailers and their customers as well as the government and taxpayers as huge sources of revenue,” Duncan said. “Congress needs to bring these fees under control for both groups.”
Senate Majority Whip Richard Durbin, D-Ill., is scheduled to hold a hearing on swipe fees charged to the government this afternoon in his role as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee’s Subcommittee on Financial Services and Government. Witnesses are expected to include officials from the Treasury Department, Government Accountability Office, Amtrak and Visa. Also testifying will be a convenience store owner and consumer group representative emphasizing the need to address private sector interchange fees.
The hearing is expected to focus on a Treasury report released Monday showing that while the federal government accepts few card payments relative to its size, agencies nonetheless received more than 80 million credit and debit card payments for goods, services, fees and fines totaling $8.6 billion last year. The government paid more than $116 million in swipe fees, making plastic its single most-expensive form of collecting payment. The figures do not include the millions of credit and debit card payments accepted by the U.S. Postal Service.
Like retailers, the government is subject to a wide and complicated range of interchange rates depending on the type of transaction (sale of goods, loan repayments or fines, for example), the level of rewards points provided to the cardholder, and whether the card is present or not present (as in Internet transactions).
The Treasury report proposes that the government negotiate with card companies for a single percentage to be charged for all credit card transactions, and for a flat fee to be charged for all debit card transactions. The report also proposed a $10,000 limit on the size of transactions that could be accepted via cards, saying checks or other forms of electronic transactions would be cheaper for big-ticket transactions. Officials also want to bar the card industry from unilaterally raising fees or establishing new fees. Treasury estimated that the changes could reduce interchange costs between $35 million and $42 million, or about one third.
While today’s hearing is focused on federal costs, state and local governments across the country are also concerned about rising swipe fees. The City of Chicago alone, for, example, recently reported that it paid $7.5 million last year.
The hearing comes as a House-Senate conference committee is negotiating the final version of financial services industry reform legislation. The Senate version of the bill includes an amendment sponsored by Durbin that would require the Federal Reserve to set regulations that would result in “reasonable and proportional” swipe fees for debit cards that take into account banks’ actual costs for processing the transactions and the fact that paper checks drawn on the came accounts are paid at face value. The amendment would also make it easier for merchants to offer discounts or other benefits for customers who don’t use credit cards, and to set minimum purchase amounts for credit cards.
