Using Mobile Devices to Authenticate Identities: A New Smart Card Alliance White Paper

PRINCETON JUNCTION, NJ--(Marketwire - Sep 5, 2012) -  Mobile devices are critical to most peoples' daily lives for more than just means of communication. Today, it's become a global trend to use these devices as a platform for secure transactions -- including identity authentication. TheSmart Card Alliance Identity Council focuses on this trend toward using mobile devices for secure smart card-based identity applications in a new white paper released today, "Mobile Devices and Identity Applications."

"For more than a decade, secure smart card technology has been adopted broadly for use in passports and identity cards because it can prevent identity theft and assist countries in verifying citizen and non-citizen identities. Now, at a time when more than 140 million1 smartphones are shipping every quarter and mobile technology has become the most influential technology and business driver in the world, members of our Identity Council created this white paper to show how mobile devices and secure smart card technology can converge to enable innovative approaches for identity authentication," said Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance.
The white paper describes the global use of digital identity credentials and the role that smart card technology plays in securing those credentials and protecting digital identity transactions. It includes descriptions of the ways mobile devices can be used to authenticate identity, including:
  • Generating and receiving one-time passwords to log on to secure sites or access secure services.
  • Storing digital identity credentials on a mobile device and using them to log on, digitally sign, and encrypt documents as part of a secure mobile browser session.
  • Storing digital identity credentials on an NFC-enabled mobile device and using the credentials for physical access or secure logon.
  • Using an NFC-enabled mobile device to read identity credentials presented with a contactless smart card (e.g., an employee ID badge) securely (e.g., by a security guard).
To download the white paper, and view more identity resources from the Identity Council, visithttp://www.smartcardalliance.org/pages/publications-mobile-devices-and-identity-applications.
Identity Council members involved in the development of this document included: Booz Allen Hamilton; Consult Hyperion; Deloitte & Touche LLP; Gemalto; HID Global; HP Enterprise Services; Identive; IDmachines; Identification Technology Partners; INSIDE Secure; Intellisoft; NXP Semiconductors; SecureKey Technologies.
About the Identity CouncilThe Smart Card Alliance Identity Council is focused on promoting best policies and practices concerning person and machine identity, including strong authentication and the appropriate authorization across different use cases. Through its activities the Council encourages the use of digital identities that provide strong authentication across assurance environments through smart credentials -- e.g., smart ID cards, mobile devices, enhanced driver's licenses, and other tokens. The Council addresses the challenges of securing identity and develops guidance for organizations so that they can realize the benefits that secure identity delivers. The Council engages a broad set of participants and takes an industry perspective, bringing careful thought, joint planning, and multiple organization resources to bear on addressing the challenges of securing identity information for proper use.

New iGR Study Discusses the Potential Impact of Near Field Communications

NFC Presents Opportunities for New Revenue Streams for Many Businesses
AUSTIN, TX--(Marketwire - Sep 7, 2012) - Near Field Communications (NFC) is a promising technology that provides access to many new applications for smartphones. In the short term, smartphones equipped with an NFC chip or an NFC SIM may become a streamlined alternative to the traditional wallet and its plethora of credit cards, debit cards, frequent flyer cards, and loyalty cards. In the long-term, NFC may well provide the mobile conduit to a vast array of new systems and applications that may significantly add to the life experience of the mobile end‐user.
NFC is a wireless technology that enables the two‐way transfer of data (text, numbers, photos, etc.) between two NFC-enabled devices. NFC tags can be located in posters, menus, brochures, or in a designated public place. These tags contain small microchips that store small amounts of information that can be transmitted to an NFC equipped smartphone, on request, by simply touching or being in close proximity to the NFC tag or receiver.
NFC will greatly impact the relationship between the smartphone user and the personal and financial information that is important to the productivity of that individual.
"Aside from improving the quality of life of the individual, NFC also presents opportunities for a wide array of business and service organizations to improve their personal and business relationship with their constituents while building a new revenue stream," said Iain Gillott, president and founder of iGR, a market research consultancy focused on the wireless and mobile industry. "iGR believes that NFC provides significant business opportunities for merchants, smart card manufacturers, financial institutions and many other firms, particularly with regards to payments."
iGR's new market research report, NFC: Opportunity Taps, provides an overview of NFC, including both the wireless technology used and its potential impact on the U.S. cellular market.
The following key questions are addressed in the new research study:
  • What is NFC?
  • How did NFC originate?
  • Why are mobile operators interested in NFC?
  • What are the benefits of NFC?
  • What are some of the challenges surrounding the implementation of NFC?
  • Who are the major NFC players?
  • What is the outlook for NFC adoption?
The information in this report will be valuable for:
  • Mobile operators
  • Device OEMs
  • NFC solution vendors
  • Content providers and distributors
  • Financial analysts and investors.
The new report can be purchased and downloaded directly from iGR's website at www.iGR-inc.comAlternatively, contact Iain Gillott at (512) 263-5682 or at Iain@iGR-inc.com for additional details.
About iGRiGR is a market strategy consultancy focused on the wireless and mobile communications industry.
