MasterCard Develops Payment Solution for ‘Aadhaar’ in India

PURCHASE, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MasterCard Worldwide, a leading global payments company, today said it has developed a payment solution for ‘Aadhaar’. ‘Aadhaar’ is a 12-digit Unique Identification Number (UID) that captures basic demographic and biometric information of Indian residents. The UID will make it possible for residents to establish their identity with financial institutions thereby providing them a gateway into the formal banking system. This payment solution will enable Aadhaar holders to perform payment transactions using UID numbers with biometric authentication.

The solution supports prepaid, debit and credit payment products in a broad based offering to drive UIDAI’s objective of Financial Inclusion.
As part of the proposed solution, it enables participating banks to issue a 16 digit Primary Account Number (PAN) to individuals enrolled into ‘Aadhaar’. MasterCard has developed a direct interface with UIDAI to perform UID biometric authentication of such payment transactions. With this solution, payment transactions will be performed using the UIDAI authentication infrastructure and MasterCard’s authorization, clearing and settlement infrastructure.

Monitise and ViVOtech Partner to Deliver NFC Mobile Payments

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Monitise (LSE: MONI.L), a global leader in mobile money solutions, has joined forces with leading near field communication (NFC) software developer ViVOtech, to deliver mobile phone payments services to banks across the United States.
The partnership means customers of participating banks will be able to turn their handset into a mobile wallet (linked to registered bank accounts, credit and debit cards) and purchase items using contactless payments at merchants with NFC capabilities.
In addition to contactless payments, service users will be able to transfer money from their registered accounts to other bank accounts, perhaps in response to an overdraft alert or to friends and family. The service will also deliver retail coupons and discounts directly to the user on their mobile phone.
From the commercial perspective, the partnership offers banks and other financial institutions a world-class, secure mobile financial management and purchasing service which they can deliver to their customers.
This NFC service will be delivered through the combination of ViVOtech’s over-the-air (OTA) software and Monitise’s Mobile Money technology.
ViVOtech’s software allows data, such as credit, debit or prepaid card credentials, to be remotely loaded onto a secure chip. This can be in an NFC phone, a SIM card or a chip contained within a microSD card that can be inserted into the majority of existing smartphones, including BlackBerry, Android, Nokia and even in various iPhone cases.
In the coming months, new handsets released by major manufacturers will have built-in NFC capability.
The partnership is part of Monitise’s program to broaden its range of contactless payments capabilities worldwide, evidenced by the recent announcement of a microSD technology trial with U.S. Bank, the 5th largest bank in the United States.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Visa Inc. (NYSE:V) and Visa Europe1 today announced the commercial availability of mobile contactless payments enabled by DeviceFidelity’s In2Pay microSD solution. For the first time in Visa’s history, a mobile contactless payment solution is now included in the list of Visa compliant products available for potential commercial deployment by financial institutions in the U.S. and select markets.

Following 18 months of technology development in partnership with Texas-based DeviceFidelity, and trials with leading financial institutions in the United States, Europe and Asia, Visa has tested and supports commercialization of In2Pay microSD for use with leading smart phones.
Smartphone models compatible for use with this landmark technology include the BlackBerry® BoldTM 96502, the iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, and the Android based Samsung Vibrant Galaxy 5, representing three of the leading mobile operating systems in the world. Visa expects to add additional phone models for use with this technology, including phones based on the Symbian and Windows operating systems.

From Trials to Commercial Availability
The compliance testing process for mobile devices established by Visa includes extensive technical, security and usability testing with respect to the Visa mobile payment functionality. It ensures reliable and secure Visa transactions that are compatible with the global standard for chip-enabled payments, and establishes a required signal range for all mobile contactless payments. Visa’s compliance testing process ensures the combination of the phone; secure chip and mobile payment application will provide the level of user experience Visa accountholders have come to expect from Visa.
The microSD payment technology has been developed in partnership with DeviceFidelity and had previously been available only to financial institutions who were participating with Visa in mobile payment trials including some of the largest financial institutions in the U.S. – JP Morgan Chase, Wells Fargo Bank, US Bancorp and Bank of America. Now, Visa issuers can obtain the technology under Visa’s standard contract terms and can load the Visa mobile payment application to microSD cards.
Issuers who choose to adopt the technology can provide their account holders with a tiny microSD card that can be inserted into the phone’s existing memory slot to enable the device for payment. The technology is compatible with existing contactless payment terminals already installed at retail outlets worldwide and enables account holders to simply hold the phone in front a payment terminal in order to pay.
This technology also opens the way for mobile operators, retailers and other stakeholders in the payments ecosystem to partner with financial institutions to bring Visa mobile payment functionality to consumers.

The CardWizard® software platform enables the instant issuance of permanent financial cards, including debit, credit, ATM or prepaid cards, at the branch level. This patent specifically outlines the CardWizard software’s ability to print standard background designs, custom images, cardholder’s name, expiry date, logos, PAN and CVV/CVV2 codes in real time on full, over-the-edge retransfer film instead of directly on the card, using inhibitor panels to inhibit the retransfer film from transferring to the card on such areas as the signature panel, magnetic stripe or contact chip.

Wells Fargo to Roll Out Mobile Payments Pilot; Visa Demonstrating Capability at CARTES 2010

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Continuing its leadership in the mobile banking space, Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC) is rolling out its Visa® (NYSE:V) microSD mobile payment pilot. This San Francisco based pilot will include 200 Wells Fargo team members who are also users of specific BlackBerry® smartphones and iPhone™ models.

The pilot features DeviceFidelity’s In2Pay™ technology. BlackBerry smartphone users will directly insert the In2Pay microSD card into the slot in their device, while iPhone users will receive the protective In2Pay Case for iPhone with the In2Pay microSD card.
To make payments, users simply open the Wells Fargo Mobile Banking application, select pay with phone and wave the phone in front of the contactless reader at the point of purchase. The reader will light up and beep, indicating that the payment has been received.
Wells Fargo team members participating in the pilot will be able to use their personal BlackBerry smartphone or iPhone to make payments wherever there are contactless payment readers, including fast food restaurants, taxis, sporting event concession stands and vending machines.

The secure In2Pay microSD card will host Visa payWave, Visa’s contactless payment application. Pilot participants can choose their payment instrument with the option of loading up to one Wells Fargo Visa Credit Card and one Wells Fargo Visa Debit Card.
The In2Pay technology developed by DeviceFidelity consists of a specially designed secure memory card containing a smart card chip, an integrated software controlled antenna and flash memory for storage of user content like photos and music. The smart card chip hosts Visa’s contactless application, Visa payWave, and is capable of hosting multiple accounts such as credit, debit and prepaid.
