Cachet Financial Launches Mobile Solution for Prepaid and Check Cashing Industries

Remote Deposit Platform Is Ideal Fit for Developing Markets

MINNEAPOLISJuly 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Cachet Financial Solutions, a leading provider of remote deposit capture (RDC) solutions, is taking its RDC platform to new heights.  Specifically, Cachet will target the growing market for mobile check cashing and reloadable prepaid cards, which traditionally serve a large portion of the U.S. unbanked and under-banked population.  Several financial service organizations will begin offering Cachet's mobile check capture solution to their customers by the end of the third quarter of this year.
Previously, RDC technology was directed toward banks and credit unions.  Now thanks to Cachet's proprietary technology, robust demand for mobile financial services, and changing customer preferences and demographics, the check cashing and prepaid card industries are poised to participate in remote checking technologies.
Cachet currently offers a full suite of RDC solutions, including a front-end, mobile check loading application for the Android, Blackberry, iPhone smartphones and tablets.  The application can be branded for check cashers, program managers and processors to allow their customers to be able to load checks on their prepaid debit cards.  Cachet also offers a back-end product (CheckReview) that allows check cashers and load solution providers to review high-resolution images of the check's front and back with full image quality analysis, CAR/LAR and Virtual MICR detection.  Cachet has developed an API which allows the check cashers to import the information into their risk/fraud mitigation tools or central database for decision/guarantee purposes.
The foundation of Cachet's mobile check capture application is convenience and simplicity for the consumer.  Mobile check capture allows consumers to load checks onto their prepaid card using their camera-equipped smartphone or tablet.  Users can load checks from anywhere at any time, allowing for quicker access to funds on their reloadable prepaid cards.  Cachet's mobile check capture is easy to use.  Users simply click the branded application on their smartphone or tablet, endorse the check, agree to any applicable fees and snap photos of the front and back of each check that is being submitted.
"Cachet is one of the few RDC companies that understands the dynamics of this industry and has both a front-end and mobile solution and a back-end check imaging/verification solution for the various solution providers," said Jeffrey Mack, President and CEO of Cachet Financial Solutions.  "Our strategy is to create strategic partnerships with the program managers, processors, check cashers and guarantors/loaders.  We believe there is a great opportunity in this space and we're poised to take the lead in it."
Cachet's strategy comes at a perfect time as industry data shows more and more consumers are moving away from traditional banking relationships in favor of alternative financial services such as check cashers and reloadable prepaid cards.  According to a 2009 FDIC National Survey, over 25% of U.S. households are under-banked or unbanked and that number appears to be rising as a result of the recent economic troubles.  According to research by Mercator Advisory Group, Americans will put an estimated $70.7 billion on reloadable prepaid cards this year.  That's a 153% increase from the $28 billion loaded onto the cards in 2009.
"Our technology allows us to develop and execute a host of solutions for a variety of financial organizations - from check cashing companies to reloadable prepaid card issuers and processors," said Mack.  "Financial service providers have to develop new methods to retain and satisfy their customers, and mobile check capture is just another example of that initiative.  We are proud of our work and will continue to innovate and develop new solutions on behalf of our customers."

Bank Customers Quick to Sign Up for Debit Rewards Programs - but Slow to Redeem, Reports Mintel Comperemedia

PR Newswire iPhone app: loading screenImage by Rob Enslin via Flickr
CHICAGOJuly 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Debit rewards programs have often been touted as an easy way to gain and retain customers. But as banks eliminate debit rewards programs as a result of changing legislation, Mintel Comperemedia surveyed consumers on their debit reward behavior and attitudes. It seems debit card programs alone aren't likely to foster customer loyalty, as 47% of respondents who participate in a debit rewards program have never redeemed their points.
"Obviously, a couple different types of people fall into the group who never redeem debit rewards points — some are saving up for something bigger, while others simply haven't accumulated enough points," says Susan Wolfe, VP of financial services at Mintel Comperemedia. "However, a number of people participate in a debit rewards program because it's so easy to sign up but never use the program again. If so, it indicates that the rewards program isn't working as a way to instill loyalty."
Mintel Comperemedia segmented survey respondents into three groups: heavy (redeem about once a month), medium (redeem every few to every six months) and light (redeem once a year) redeemers. Thirty-six percent of heavy redeemers and 30% of medium redeemers, compared to 55% of light redeemers, would continue to use their debit card the same way if their bank eliminated their debit rewards program — further suggesting that debit rewards programs are not a strong incentive to stick with a particular banking institution.
"Overall, rewards aren't going away, and many banks will continue to offer and promote these programs," adds Susan Wolfe. "But we will see a shift in that rewards are offered as a benefit to different levels of customers and in that way, they will become part of an overall loyalty program — rather than just a debit rewards program."
The survey also assessed consumers' willingness to pay for a debit rewards program and found that 36% of heavy redeemers are willing to pay as much as $4/month for their debit reward program, while 61% would be willing to pay $1/month. Not surprisingly, it's those who redeem often who are most willing to pay extra for the benefits.

TransUnion: Consumers Made $72 Billion More in Credit Card Payments Than Purchases

July 27, 2011 06:05 ET
Analysis Contradicts Belief That Balances Have Declined Primarily Because of Charge-Offs

CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwire - Jul 27, 2011) - A new TransUnion analysis found that consumers made an estimated $72 billion more in payments on their credit cards than purchases between the first quarters of 2009 and 2010. This is in contrast to the belief that charge-offs (where creditors write off debt that they deem is uncollectable as a loss) were the primary driver of lower credit card balances.
"Many people in the financial services industry believe charge-offs have been the leading factor in declining credit card debt since the start of the recession," said Ezra Becker, vice president of research and consulting in TransUnion's financial services business unit. "In fact, some have stated that charge-offs account for the entire change in card balances over the past two to three years. In reality, the dynamic is more complex. Our analysis shows that consumers have made a concerted effort to pay down their credit cards during these uncertain economic times."
Just five years prior to the TransUnion analysis, consumers had made an estimated $2.1 billion more in purchases than payments. That constitutes a nearly $75 billion turnaround in consumer payment dynamics from 2004 to 2009.
"This reversal is even more profound when you consider that alternative forms of revolving credit, e.g. home equity lines of credit, were far more accessible in 2004 than in 2009. So while charge-offs have played a major role in lower credit card debt levels, it was not the only factor. Consumers were also paying down their debt across the risk spectrum," added Becker.
On a per-borrower basis between Q1 2009 and Q1 2010, average credit card debt in the U.S. declined more than $600 from $5,776 to $5,165. As of the first quarter of 2011, average credit card debt per borrower stood at $4,679, representing a 10-year low.
A majority of consumers either current on their payments or less than 60 days delinquent saw declining balances in the analysis. This was evident across the credit risk spectrum. The analysis viewed anonymized credit files using the TransUnion Account Management 3.0 scoring model (150-900 scale).
Score Range (as of Q1 2009) - Percent of Consumers with Decreasing Balances801-850 - 58.30%
701-750 - 58.97%
601-650 - 54.98%
501-550 - 53.44%
"It is also important to note that the drivers of deleveraging on an incident basis are different at various points along that credit risk spectrum," continued Becker. "Charge-off is a more predominant driver of deleveraging among subprime consumers. Among prime consumers, paydown is the major factor. Although it sounds simple, this is critical insight for lenders: it allows them to better understand the preferences of various sub-segments of consumers and respond appropriately to each."
The TransUnion analysis of credit card deleveraging complements and adds additional insight into research conducted by the Federal Reserve on noncash payments. Released in December 2010, that study revealed that the use of credit cards to pay for purchases declined in 2009, and that debit card usage now exceeds all other forms of noncash payments1.
This trend also was supported by an IBOPE Zogby International survey commissioned by TransUnion in early June. Approximately 55% of consumers said they chose to use their debit card over their credit card more than half the time when making daily purchases. In fact, 47% of respondents said they did so more than three out of four times. Another 8% of respondents said they chose to use their debit card over credit card 51-75% of the time.
"All things being equal, we believe that consumers, especially younger adults, will continue to have an increasing preference to use their debit cards over credit cards," said Steve Chaouki, group vice president in TransUnion's financial services business unit. "However, the credit/debit card landscape is still in transition. Regulatory and legislative proposals either currently under discussion or recently enacted will impact the industry significantly and could alter this payment preference trend. Thus, consumer credit use and behavior should be closely monitored in the coming years."
Study Methodology:The study reviewed data from TransUnion's database, the Federal Reserve G.19 report and interest rate information from Bankrate.com between Q1 2009 and Q1 2010 to perform the deleveraging analysis. Approximately 1.65 million credit card accounts that were less than 60 days past due as of the end of Q1 2009 were included in the study. Their balance trends were evaluated as of the end of Q1 2010, and delinquency was monitored over the intervening 12 months. The consumers holding these accounts were scored as of the starting date using the TransUnion Account Management 3.0 scoring model, so balance behavior could be analyzed across the risk spectrum.

Mobile Gaming Revenues Will Exceed $16 Billion in 2016, as In-App Payments Grow, Says ABI Research

LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Mobile gaming is establishing itself as a serious form of mass entertainment, appealing to a diverse group of consumers across the world. The growth in this market is driven on one hand by the emergence of modern touchscreen smartphones as a suitable gaming platform, and on the other hand by innovation in casual games that attract users from both genders and from all age groups.

This is also reflected in the industry’s revenue base, which will grow from less than $5 billion in 2011 to more than $16 billion in 2016.
Shift in revenue
ABI Research senior analyst Aapo Markkanen comments, “An ever-larger share of mobile gaming revenue is coming from virtual goods and other purchases that take place within the game. These in-app payments will account for about one-third of the 2011 revenue base, but by the end of 2016 their share will increase to almost half of the total. Also, the in-game advertising revenue will increase considerably, as more and more advertisers take advantage of mobile games’ mass-media potential.”
Thanks to digital distribution of the content, barriers to entering the mobile gaming sector are low.
Good content better than luck
However, Markkanen warns, “The dynamics of both casual gaming and the discovery of new content make it a risky hit-and-miss business, though good content is still definitely more important than luck. Rovio’s ‘Angry Birds’ is an early example of the sort of following that the most successful titles will be able to achieve, yet for one such hit there will be scores of failed attempts to catch consumers’ attention. This is likely to result in further consolidation among developers, as can be seen from recent acquisitions made by industry giants such as Electronic Arts and Zynga.”
ABI Research’s new “Mobile Gaming” study (http://www.abiresearch.com/research/1006314) describes available types of games and revenue models, provides analyses of market drivers and inhibitors, and offers an overview of the main technology issues.
