A recent Gartner report positions money transfer and mobile payment among the top 10 mobile applications in 2012.
Discover Gemalto’s Mobile Financial Services offers:
Mobile Money: utilizing a mobile wallet, the solution enables users to securely transfer money, pay bills and make purchases from selected merchants, as well as top-up airtime. With Mobile Money, mobile subscribers with limited or no access to retail banking services can manage their income and payments securely, helping them build healthy and stable economic lifestyles.
Mobile Banking: enabling secure access to banking services, anytime and anywhere, with an optimized user experience over any mobile device. Users can receive notifications and alerts, pay bills, transfer money, apply for credit, deposit checks, withdraw cash from ATMs and manage their bank accounts.
Mobile Payment: enabling secure remote and proximity payments for digital or physical goods and services, whether in-store or online, using the mobile device. A seamless payment experience allows customers to tap to pay or check-out with a single click, while delivering value-added-services beyond the transaction, such as promotional offers or loyalty programs. The offer also extends to the Netsize App Store Billing solution, bringing secure and convenient payment to mobile subscribers for buying apps and digital content, on many of today’s leading handsets.

NFC functionality enables convenient interactions with the physical world, taking consumer applications like payment, ticketing, couponing and loyalty programs to a whole new level of easy engagement. Behind the scenes, the Trusted Service Manager (TSM) ensures that sensitive data, user credentials and software applications are handled and provisioned with unmatched security protection and seamless service delivery.

Chase Paymentech Helps Protect Retailers against Online Payment Fraud

Launch of Safetech Fraud Tools in Europe Delivers New Option for Minimizing Lost Sales and Combating Fraud
DUBLIN--()--Chase Paymentech, a leading merchant acquirer and payment processor, today announced the launch of its Safetech SM Fraud Tools in Europe to help protect merchants from online payment fraud. Available to Chase Paymentech Europe customer-not-present (CNP) retail customers, Safetech Fraud Tools are designed to help online retailers retain legitimate sales while preventing fraudulent transactions.
“The greater the volume of sales you handle when your customer is not present at the point of sale, the greater you may be exposed to fraud. As your online business grows so will your appeal to fraudsters”
According to research recently conducted by Chase Paymentech, 62% of mid-sized and large companies that handle customer-not-present (CNP) payments lost money through fraudulent transactions during the past twelve months, costing each company an average of £1.2 million*. Despite the scale of online fraud however, only 12% of companies use a dedicated fraud management system to protect themselves and most companies surveyed still carry out manual checks on possible fraud activity.
“The greater the volume of sales you handle when your customer is not present at the point of sale, the greater you may be exposed to fraud. As your online business grows so will your appeal to fraudsters,” said Shane Fitzpatrick, managing director at Chase Paymentech Europe. “There is no magic solution to safeguard online merchants against the risk of fraud. Rather, merchants must develop an attitude towards risk and fraud based on their own business model and appetite towards risk. Merchants should seek expert advice to decide what tools are required to best mitigate their risk exposure. Safetech Fraud Tools provides merchants with innovative technology to help merchants fight the battle against on-line fraud.”
Safetech Fraud Tools are an innovate suite of security solutions designed specifically to combat fraud. The solution offers merchants a real-time and automated fraud screening service. Safetech Fraud Tools provide a fraud score with each payment transaction to indicate the level of risk associated with it. Safetech Fraud Tools also includes continuous transaction monitoring, a customisable rules engine and advanced fraud detection technologies.
Safetech Fraud Tools have been available in the United States since January 2011. Merchants that utilise Safetech Fraud Tools have seen chargebacks reduced by 30 to 50 percent. Some have achieved increases in their top-line revenues, while others have streamlined their fraud operations. One top Internet retailer using Safetech Fraud Tools has consolidated its fraud review program to a single full-time employee managing fraud on more than 25,000 orders per day.
“Chase Paymentech is wise to bring together these much needed solutions to their merchants,” said Carol Coye Benson, managing partner at Glenbrook Partners. “We now live in a world where managing risks associated with payment fraud is part of the daily routine for merchants everywhere. By closely integrating these tools with the payment processing work streams, the Safetech approach makes the process more efficient.”
How Does it Work?
Before a transaction is completed, Safetech Fraud Tools determine the location and device identification of the customer via custom scripts run on the retailer’s online payment page. Once the consumer completes the purchase, all data is sent to Chase Paymentech with the authorisation request. Chase Paymentech then sends the authorisation request to the payment brands and receives a response that includes approval or decline, as well as Address Verification Service response data. This data is routed through Chase Paymentech’s Risk Inquiry System for analysis, checked against custom rules implemented by the retailer, and a fraud score is calculated and returned with the authorisation response. The retailer then chooses to accept or decline the transaction.
Safetech Fraud Tools represent a powerful Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) based application, including multi-layer device fingerprinting, proxy piercing, dynamic order linking, dynamic risk scoring, custom rules management and auto-decisioning. These applications provide a unique solution that can dramatically enhance a merchant’s risk management performance. Safetech Fraud Tools can be used effectively regardless of currency and payment method, simplifying the cost and complexity of merchant’s global fraud management initiatives.

Chase Paymentech Launches 6th Annual Cyber Holiday Pulse Index

Data Provides Insight into Consumer Online Shopping Trends through the Holidays, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday; Online Sales Up 25% Year-over-Year
DALLAS--()--Chase Paymentech, a leading merchant acquirer and payment processor, today launched the sixth annual edition of the Cyber Holiday Pulse Index. The Pulse Index provides an inside look at consumer online shopping trends for the key shopping days Black Friday and Cyber Monday and throughout the holiday shopping season.
“Forrester expects to see 2011 U.S. online holiday sales grow 15% over 2010.”
The Index presents aggregated daily payment processing activity for 50 of the leading U.S. online retailers— measuring payment transactions, dollar volume and average ticket value— giving an almost real-time snapshot of year-over-year ecommerce growth. The data is taken directly from Chase Paymentech’s market leading processing platform and updated every business day.
With Black Friday and Cyber Monday nearly two weeks away, it appears that ecommerce shoppers are not waiting around. Pulse Index data for the first two weeks of November is showing strong year-over-year growth, with online sales up over 25 percent. Average ticket value, however, appears to be continuing a downward trend for the fourth straight year, currently down over 9 percent. 2011 has been a good year so far for online retailers, and the Pulse Index will track if they can sustain or even improve that momentum in the next several weeks.
By analyzing the actual payment activity for 50 top ecommerce retailers, the Pulse Index is a valuable tool for spotting several key online shopping trends. For example, the index has demonstrated a trend toward smaller average ticket values over the past few years. While it’s clear that the recession drove that trend for a couple of seasons, last year the data was able to link smaller tickets to the growing demand for digital media such as music and, more recently, ebooks.
Will Online Holiday Shopping Live Up to Expectations in 2011?
2011 has been a banner year for ecommerce so far. The U.S. Department of Commerce estimated that online sales grew by over 17% in the first half of the year. As ecommerce continues to grow in importance as a retail channel, its significance during the critical holiday shopping season has also been steadily rising.
“Our Pulse data shows that many ecommerce merchants realize as much as 30-40% of annualized sales volumes during the last two months of the year," said Mike Duffy, president of Chase Paymentech. "With increased promotional activity, expanded markets for digital products, and the potential of mobile shopping, 2011 promises to be the most exciting holiday online shopping season yet. The Pulse Index will help ecommerce businesses monitor the health of the market throughout the season."
Sucharita Mulpuru, Vice President and Principal Analyst at Forrester Research, added “Online sales growth continues to rise by strong double digits as the drivers of adoption and wallet shift remain the same: convenience, price, selection, and overall value." As a result, "Forrester expects to see 2011 U.S. online holiday sales grow 15% over 2010."
Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and Beyond
Pulse Index data has also shown that Cyber Monday is not a myth – it has been the single largest shopping day of the year in recent years, but only by a slight margin. While Cyber Monday is important, the Pulse data has consistently demonstrated that online shopping activity continues to be very strong over the weeks that follow, and that merchants should be planning for near peak levels of demand throughout the season.
The Pulse Index also identified a trend indicating that more consumers are shopping earlier in the holiday season, even before Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Black Friday has been a brick and mortar phenomenon for years, but ecommerce may be changing the rules, allowing consumers to take advantage of deals before the stores open.
Online Shopping Statistics - Updated Every Business Day
The Pulse Index is updated with online shopping statistics every business day throughout the holiday period, from Nov. 1 through Jan. 6. Insights, analysis and commentary will be provided weekly online. For more information and to see the Pulse Index in action, go to http://pulse.chasepaymentech.com.

Merchant Reputation Can Drive Mobile Payments Adoption, says Auriemma Consulting Group

NEW YORK--()--Sooner or later the U.S. will see widespread adoption of mobile payments, says the experts, but they disagree about how soon and how widespread it will be. Big players in banking and in telephony are investing heavily in developing mobile payment infrastructure. The ultimate object of this feverish activity is consumer adoption, as financial institutions proceed on the assumption that “if we build it, they will come”. However, results of a recent survey by Cardbeat®, a syndicated monthly publication of Auriemma Consulting Group (ACG), suggest that large retailers may have a significant influence on the mobile payments adoption curve.
“if we build it, they will come”
“Mobile banking, as opposed to mobile payments, is becoming mainstream, keeping pace with the penetration of smartphones,” noted Dr. Patricia Sahm, Managing Director at ACG. Smartphone ownership has jumped from 32% in Q3 2010 to 41% less than a year later, among the 9 out of 10 consumers who have a mobile phone. Just under a third of Cardbeat respondents say they have mobile banking capabilities, and 40% of them have downloaded a banking application within the last 12 months. “Despite the recency of their adoption, users show a fairly high frequency of usage, with half using the app at least once a week,” she said. Also, while informational users predominate with 79% who use their phone to check their balance, about 4 out of 10 consumers do online bill payment from their phones, paving the way for the transition to mobile payments, she notes.
Security is a concern for almost all users, even the under-35s who are the most positively predisposed toward the concept of mobile payments. Overall, half of consumers say they are very or somewhat uncomfortable with the idea of making purchases with a mobile phone, and their primary concern is security; they also say they have enough payment options and see no need for a new one. At the other end of the scale, one-third of respondents were very or somewhat positive about the concept, and these proponents say mobile payments would save time and money and would be convenient; this group also likes new technology.
Both groups, however, say that the most likely place they would expect to use mobile payments would be in-person at a large retailer. In contrast, only 20% would use it to pay a parking meter. “It’s an interesting finding, because generally with a new payment technology people want to test it out with small purchases first,” Sahm pointed out. “However, both the technophiles and technophobes say they’d feel more comfortable with a large retailer, where the average ticket size is fairly high, rather than the trivial amounts involved with feeding the meter. Large retailers give a sense of security that the consumer would have recourse in case of a problem, and their adoption of mobile payment technology will be a signal to consumers that it’s ok to try it.”
Cardbeat research data was gathered using a web-based survey administered to 502 credit card users in the U.S. during the month of June 2011. The number of interviews completed on a monthly basis is sufficient to allow for statistical significance testing between sub-groups at the 95% confidence level ±5%.

First Data’s Global Privacy Policy Approved by European Regulators

ATLANTA--()--First Data Corporation, a global leader in electronic commerce and payment processing, today announced that its binding corporate rules for data privacy have been authorized by the United Kingdom’s Information Commissioner’s Office. First Data’s binding corporate rules have been approved by the data protection authorities in 18 European Union member states. First Data is the eleventh company to be authorized by the Information Commissioner’s Office, making it one of only a handful of companies worldwide that have completed this rigorous process to establish the highest standards of global data privacy practices. First Data is the first payment processor to have achieved this recognition.

“Data privacy is fundamental to the success of our business, and we’re deeply committed to protecting the information entrusted to us by our clients and employees alike. We have high standards for data privacy, and this recognition from exacting European regulators demonstrates our global leadership in data protection compliance”
The European Union’s Data Protection Directive is recognized worldwide for establishing rigorous data privacy protections. Binding corporate rules are a company-wide privacy policy to guarantee that a company’s practices are consistent with the European data protection law. They are considered the platinum standard for compliance with the European Union Data Protection Directive. First Data’s binding corporate rules are designed to enforce a consistent high standard for protecting personal data throughout the organization, and will allow First Data to transfer personal data from the European Economic Area to its affiliates elsewhere in the world—which is prohibited under the European Union Data Protection Directive unless adequate safeguards are in place.
“Data privacy is fundamental to the success of our business, and we’re deeply committed to protecting the information entrusted to us by our clients and employees alike. We have high standards for data privacy, and this recognition from exacting European regulators demonstrates our global leadership in data protection compliance,” said First Data Chief Executive Officer Jonathan J. Judge.
“First Data should be commended for its commitment to the concept of binding corporate rules and for the respect for the privacy of individuals that this demonstrates,” said David Smith, Deputy Information Commissioner for the United Kingdom. “The ICO welcomes approaches from multi-national organizations that need to share personal information within their own group, but outside Europe and who want to use binding corporate rules to enable that.”
First Data’s binding corporate rules are based on a set of principles, established in 2006, that limits access to personal data and only permits the transfer of personal data based on clear business need, and then only with adequate security and when all legal requirements are met. Now, the company will be able to respond to data transfer needs more quickly, contain infrastructure costs and manage its resources more efficiently. First Data’s customers can be confident that the company’s data protection practices have been scrutinized and approved by the European data protection regulators.
The initiative to create the binding corporate rules for data protection was led by John Atkins, First Data’s chief privacy officer, who oversaw the development of the company’s privacy program in the United States. First Data worked with the London office of the global law firm SNR Denton to develop and secure approval for its binding corporate rules.
Following approval of the binding corporate rules by the European data protection regulators, First Data will complete the formal local administrative processes and begin training and implementation.
Around the world, every second of every day, First Data makes payment transactions secure, fast and easy for merchants, financial institutions and their customers. First Data leverages its vast product portfolio and expertise to drive customer revenue and profitability. Whether the choice of payment is by debit or credit card, gift card, check or mobile phone, online or at the checkout counter, First Data takes every opportunity to go beyond the transaction.

Samsung's New Secu-NFC Chip Enables Secure Mobile Payment by Enhancing NFC with Security Features

PRESS RELEASE
Nov. 14, 2011, 9:00 p.m. EST
SEOUL, South Korea, Nov 14, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a world leader in advanced semiconductor solutions, announced today its new system-in-package (SIP) near field communications (NFC) chip, the SENHRN1. The new Secu-NFC chip combines a NFC controller and a secure element storing personal information and security keys with advanced encryption technologies, a prerequisite for reliable and efficient mobile payment on NFC-enabled mobile devices. Samsung's new NFC solution will be on display at CARTES 2011 from November 15th through 17th at the Samsung booth # 3 C 035 in hall 3 at the Paris-Nord Villepinte Exhibition Center.
"Mobile payment, ticketing, data sharing, electronic ID card functions are some of the diverse user services enabled by NFC technology, which is becoming a key service enabler on emerging convergence technologies," said Dojun Rhee, vice president of System LSI marketing, Device Solutions, Samsung Electronics. "Samsung's new secure NFC solution with its high data storage capacity provides consumers with ample room to expand operation service and features to deliver the ultimate user experience."
The new solution is based on Samsung's proven in-house expertise and experience in smartcard ICs, which involves advanced RF sensitivity features and enhanced data encryption technologies, and its wealth of package technology, utilizing advanced SIP technology.
Samsung's Secu-NFC chip, packaged as a SIP, has identical form factor measurements (4.3mm X 4.3mm X 1.0mm) as a standalone NFC chip. This raises the area space efficiencies on mobile devices. The pin-to-pin compatibility also allows mobile device's designers to immediately adopt the new solution without additional cost, engineering and design efforts.
The embedded secure element has a 760 Kilobyte (KB) high-density flash memory providing users with sufficient capacity to store one's choice of diverse mobile services such as credit card codes, e-money, transportation transaction/payment services, coupon services and more.
Moreover, Samsung secures various payment solutions including operation systems required for mobile payment services in respective regions and countries, including Europe, North America and China.
Samsung's NFC controller has an enhanced battery-off feature so it remains active for payment transactions even when the mobile device is discharged. Additionally, an embedded single wire protocol interface, allows consumers to enjoy the full breadth of services available by using U-SIM as well as the embedded secure element.
Samsung's Secu-NFC chip, the SENHRN1 is currently sampling to customers.
According to market research firm ABI Research, NFC-enabled mobile phones are expected to reach 34 million units in 2011 and at a 75 percent compound annual growth rate to reach 552 million units by 2016 of which up to 78 percent would be comprised of secure NFC enabled handsets with the embedded secure element.

It is designed to provide more options for a safer and simpler checkout process for online merchants and consumers using Ultrabook™ devices and future generations of Intel-based PCs.
The two companies are working together to optimize a variety of emerging payments technologies, including MasterCard’s PayPass® and Intel® Identity Protection Technology (IPT). Intel® Identity Protection Technology can enable consumers to use strong two-factor authentication and hardware-based display protection. This provides increased online security against malware. Additionally, when used with an Intel® Identity Protection Technology-enabled reader, consumers will be able to pay for online purchases with a simple tap of theirPayPass-enabled card, tag, or smart phone on an Ultrabook device.
“MasterCard is constantly working to improve the shopping experience for consumers and merchants,” said Ed McLaughlin, chief emerging payments officer, MasterCard. “The collaboration with Intel will deliver enhanced security and faster checkout – with the convenience of a simple click or tap.”
Consumers continue to shift their shopping to the Internet. Online sales reached $176.2 billion last year in the United States alone and are expected to grow at double-digit percentage rates annually for the next 5 years, according to Forrester Research.
“Our goal is to enable users of Ultrabook devices and future generations of Intel-based PCs to enjoy the convenience of e-commerce while making online payments safer from malware and hackers with the advanced security capabilities of Intel Identity Protection Technology,” said George Thangadurai, general manager of PC Client Services Division, Intel Corporation. “Online commerce is a key focus area for Intel, and through this partnership with MasterCard, we intend to deliver an innovative, personalized and safer e-commerce experience to consumers.”

SAN JOSE, Calif.--()--VeriFone Systems, Inc. (NYSE: PAY), today announced it has signed a definitive agreement with Nordic Capital Fund V (“Nordic Capital”) to acquire Point, Northern Europe’s largest provider of payment and gateway services and solutions for retailers. VeriFone intends to extend the Point platform throughout the region and beyond, with the aim of creating the world’s largest infrastructure for rapid deployment of alternative payments.
“We are committed to maintaining the high growth and entrepreneurial culture that has driven our success over the past two decades. We have known and worked with VeriFone for 20 years and their fast-paced culture is the Point culture.”
VeriFone will pay approximately €600 million to acquire all of the equity of Point and will also retire at closing existing Point debt of approximately €170 million. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of 2011, and is subject to customary closing conditions. The transaction is expected to be accretive to non-GAAP earnings by $0.08 to $0.10 per fully diluted share in fiscal 2012 and $0.30 to $0.35 in fiscal 2013.
Point, based in Stockholm, has operations in 11 Northern European countries and serves a captive network encompassing almost 475,000 merchant contracts. Through this network, Point offers retailers a full range of services and solutions, including point-of-sale technology and support, gateway services, card encryption services, and multi-channel e-commerce processing. Point's recurring subscription services model ensures its customers always have the latest security, compliance and technological capabilities as well as uninterrupted and secure access to a broad range of mission critical services. Point efficiently passes transactions along from its network of gateways to a broad range of acquiring banks and processing entities.
Douglas G. Bergeron, VeriFone CEO, said: "We are delighted to welcome Point customers and Point employees to VeriFone. They have built a phenomenal business and we believe that the best is yet to come."
Bergeron added: “For the past two years, we have been transforming our business to respond to the rapidly evolving needs of consumers, retailers, and payment innovators worldwide. Our vision is to offer retailers everywhere a managed service to easily accept all existing payment types, including the evolving alternative and mobile payment methods being offered by Google, PayPal, Groupon, Isis, Visa, MasterCard, and American Express. At the same time, we can increasingly offer the new payment entrants easy and accelerated access to our worldwide installation of more than 20 million merchant lanes.”
Johan Tjärnberg, Point CEO, said: "We are committed to maintaining the high growth and entrepreneurial culture that has driven our success over the past two decades. We have known and worked with VeriFone for 20 years and their fast-paced culture is the Point culture." The 125 software developers at Point have built unique European multi-country payment software that works seamlessly for traditional electronic payments and Internet payments.
“Under Nordic Capital’s ownership, Point has had fantastic growth, with sales close to five times higher than at the time of acquisition and taken the position as the leader in advanced payment services in Europe. Nordic Capital has supported the management to make significant R&D investments and do strategic add-on acquisitions, in order to create value and sustainable growth opportunities, and thereby make sure that Point remains a European leader in a field that has a tremendous growth potential,” said Fredrik Näslund, Partner, NC Advisory AB, advisor to the Nordic Capital Funds.
