Financial Literacy Barometer for 28 nations released; Brazil ranks first in financial education; United States fourth
CHICAGOApril 23, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and Visa Inc. convened their annual summit on financial literacy today, moderated by Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine Editor Janet Bodnar, featuring Gail Hillebrand of the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Governor Jose Dario Uribe of the Colombian Central Bank and Canadian Parliamentary Finance Committee Chair James Rajotte.
At the Financial Literacy and Education Summit 2012, speakers explored potential solutions to improving financial literacy worldwide and discussed the successes and challenges faced in their own countries.
"The public-private partnership between the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and Visa in hosting this Summit is a model on how we can improve financial literacy in the United States and around the world," said Charles Evans, President and Chief Executive Officer, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
2012 marks the sixth consecutive year the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and Visa have co-sponsored this Summit, which helps to mark Financial Literacy Month nationally and Money Smart Week in Chicago.
Global Financial Literacy Barometer: Key Findings
As part of the Summit, Visa and Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine released the results of the 2012 Global Financial Literacy Barometer that assessed and ranked the financial literacy levels of people in 28 nations.  Brazil topped the list as having the most financially literate people, followed by MexicoAustraliathe United States and Canada.
Among the other key findings of the survey:
  • 68% of survey respondents have fewer than three months' worth of emergency reserves on hand to fund basic needs in the event of an unexpected financial event like job loss.
  • 25% of respondents who report they don't have enough funds to cover a personal economic emergency fall into high income categories.
  • Respondents in more than half of the 28 countries surveyed believe that overall, teenagers and young adults do not understand money management basics, such as budgeting, savings, debt and spending responsibly.
  • In wealthier countries, many parents don't speak as regularly with their children about the financial future, and the United States falls into the middle of this group.
  • Across the globe, the youngest and oldest citizens face the most personal economic risk in the sense that they have the smallest emergency reserves and they are least likely to follow a budget.
"The Barometer clearly demonstrates that while there have been great strides made in advancing financial education, there is still much more to be done," said Oliver Jenkyn, Group Executive, North America, Visa Inc.  "Visa and the Federal Reserve Bank ofChicago share a commitment to helping people of all ages gain the financial tools necessary to become better money managers.  Today's annual Summit is an important part of this effort."
A more detailed summary of the key findings of the Global Financial Literacy Barometer can be found at:www.practicalmoneyskills.com/barometer.
Today, Visa also unveiled a new personal finance high school curriculum called the "Practical Money Skills Course."  This free, comprehensive program covers an array of vital subjects, including budgeting, saving, loans, insurance and more.  The curriculum can be downloaded online at www.practicalmoneyskills.com/course or at iTunes as an iPad e-book.
The Summit also featured a panel presentation of original financial education research that explored ways financial knowledge and behavior can be improved.
Summit participants included:

New Native Mobile Banking Applications Help KeyBank Expand Mobile Channel

SAN FRANCISCOApril 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- mFoundry, North America's largest mobile banking and payments provider, today announced KeyBank launched mFoundry's mobile banking technology, mBanking, to expand the bank's mobile banking offering.  mFoundry's mobile banking solution is now used by nearly 10 million consumers across more than 675 financial institutions nationwide, including one-third of the top 50 banks in the United States.  KeyBank is the latest financial institution to select mFoundry's mBanking solution to support its mobile banking requirements.
"KeyBank is committed to providing client-focused solutions in the mobile channel that are secure, save time, and are easy to use," said Jordan Olack, KeyBank vice president and mobile channel manager. "Our clients' top request in mobile banking features and service was access to native mobile banking apps for Android, BlackBerry, and iPhone."
"After an exhaustive vendor evaluation, it became obvious mFoundry was best positioned to provide KeyBank with applications to satisfy our clients and to provide us with a mobile foundation to build upon as we deploy new features and services in the future," Olack added.
Adhering to an aggressive schedule, mFoundry launched KeyBank's mobile banking applications with very successful results. In the first week following the launch of its new mobile banking apps, half of KeyBank's existing Android users upgraded to the new app.  The number of new user downloads of the iPhone application has exceeded the bank's expectations by nearly two-fold.  "It's great to see so many clients tapping our expanded mobile services. Their enthusiasm for the new service demonstrates Key's commitment to developing services based on clients' insight," said Olack.
"Tightly controlled execution is critical anytime you are replacing and enhancing an existing mobile offering," said Drew Sievers, CEO and co-founder, mFoundry. "We provided KeyBank with the best possible solution in the shortest period of time, while putting an extensible foundation in place – our mobile financial services network – that will allow KeyBank to roll out new features and enhanced mobile banking services faster in the future."
Olack said KeyBank's mobile channel strategy is to build in phases, evaluating each new service in terms of client insight and industry best practices. The bank is also evaluating services like mobile deposit for its customers - services that can be seamlessly activated through its mFoundry mobile banking applications. The bank is also in the early stages of evaluating services that will help it provide customers with an integrated payment experience – mFoundry currently provides multiple mobile payments options for banks and credit unions.

Digital Dining to Offer Tabbedout

Leading POS vendor to offer merchants a mobile payment solution that lets consumers pay tabs with their phone
AUSTIN, Texas--()--Digital Dining, a leading developer of hospitality point-of-sale (POS) software, will add Tabbedout, the free mobile payment app that allows consumers to open, view and pay tabs with their phones, to their product portfolio by the end of Q2. This offering means a larger segment of the hospitality industry across the country can now offer a mobile payment option – and the more than 100M U.S. consumers with smartphones in their pockets have an instant and secure way to pay bar and restaurant tabs.
“Our goal is to make mobile payment an everyday simple and secure process for the consumer that generates additional revenue for Tabbedout venues.”
Tabbedout will be integrated with Digital Dining POS, making it as easy as a simple software update for bars and restaurants to deploy Tabbedout without the need for any new hardware. With Tabbedout, bars and restaurants can spend more time serving food and drink to their patrons instead of closing out checks, which means more revenue to their bottom line.
“Mobile payments are becoming more popular and demanded by the consumer, and we need to provide a way for our merchants to quickly meet that demand in a secure manner,” said Andre Nataf, senior business development manager for Menusoft Systems Corporation, creators of Digital Dining POS. “We are always looking for the best solutions and technologies to add to our POS platform, and Tabbedout provides a unique solution specifically built for the hospitality industry.”
Available on both iPhone and Android smartphones, Tabbedout was built by security experts who like to have a good time. The mobile payment app allows users to securely store credit or debit card information directly on their phone, encrypted and under passphrase protection, instead of on host servers or in “the cloud.” Consumers are safe from the threat of stolen payment information due to lost or forgotten credit cards since they now can open and pay their tab directly from their phone without handing over their credit or debit information to a server. Patrons can also view their itemized tab in real-time, removing any surprises at the end of the night.
“Integrating with a POS leader like Digital Dining allows us to offer our mobile payment solution to a wider network of bars and restaurants nationwide,” said Kevin McKeand, vice president of sales for Tabbedout. “Our goal is to make mobile payment an everyday simple and secure process for the consumer that generates additional revenue for Tabbedout venues."
About Digital Dining
As a pioneer in the PC-based POS hospitality market, Digital Dining is proud to be approaching its twenty-eighth year in business. Today, it continues to lead the industry with extremely innovative functionality and features, most of which have come from suggestions made by our more than 50,000 customers. MBTA and Masabi to Launch First Smartphone Rail Ticketing System in the U.S.

Apps will allow Commuter Rail customers to purchase and display tickets on iPhone, Android and Blackberry
BOSTON--()--Today, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and Masabi US Ltd, the transit mobile ticketing pioneer, jointly announce that they will be bringing mobile ticketing to MBTA commuter rail riders this fall. With applications for iPhone, Android, and Blackberry, customers will be able to seamlessly purchase commuter rail tickets and passes. Once tickets are purchased, customers will be able to use and display directly via their phone screen.
“MBTA will also see significant benefits in terms of reducing costly cash handling charges and the cost of additional ticket machines. We are delighted to be working with them to launch our first mTicketing system in the U.S.”
“MassDOT and the MBTA are striving to bring our customers convenience without added costs. We are delivering just that with this project and this technology,” said MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard A. Davey.
“With this new and innovative approach, we are putting a ticket machine right in the palms of our customers’ hands,” said Acting MBTA General Manager Jonathan Davis.
Less than half of MBTA’s 140 Commuter Rail stations have fare vending machines, forcing many customers to pay for tickets on board. But that will soon change as riders will be able to purchase tickets via credit or debit cards directly from their phones. Monthly pass holders will be able to seamlessly link a plastic CharlieCard to their pass allowing them “tap-in” instead of using magnetic tickets for the MBTA subway and bus systems.
The new solution will help the MBTA reduce costs by eliminating the need for additional vending machines and lowering cash handling costs. To help combat fare evasion, all mobile tickets will have barcodes allowing for validation. Throughout the pilot program, smart phone-equipped train conductors will be checking tickets to ensure their validity. Masabi will provide a comprehensive mTicketing solution including; consumer-facing applications, backend servers, payment integration and scanning/validation software for train conductors.
“By placing a personalized ticket machine in the pocket of commuters, they can now buy tickets wherever they are, faster than ever before,” said Giacomo Biggiero, Director of Masabi US Ltd. “MBTA will also see significant benefits in terms of reducing costly cash handling charges and the cost of additional ticket machines. We are delighted to be working with them to launch our first mTicketing system in the U.S.”
In the coming months, the MBTA will be inviting customers to participate in designing the new applications via focus groups and a small group pilot which will roll out in late summer. The full deployment to all MBTA customers is expected this fall.
All transactions are secured using the award-winning encryptME security system that has been validated to U.S. Government standards.

Mobile Commerce Vendor Analysis 2012

m-commerce warms up
m-commerce warms up (Photo credit: Will Lion)

DUBLIN--()--Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Mobile Commerce Vendor Analysis 2012" report to their offering.
There are a wide variety of factors that define the success of a mobile technology including instant connectivity, convenience, and personalization. Successful mobile applications are typically perceived by their users as being accessible anytime and anywhere, highly adaptable to the user's needs, and not revealing any private information about the user. However, many potential consumers of mobile technology are not convinced that all m-commerce applications would provide them with such an experience.
Consumers are often wary about engaging in m-commerce transactions because many m-commerce features and services are not identical to those of e- commerce. Presently, m-commerce is not positioned to replace e-commerce - instead it is best suited to supplement it. A number of socio-technological factors have a significant effect on the customer perception and the rate of adoption of mobile technology and m-commerce. These factors form tightly integrated socio-psychological barriers that include user unawareness, inefficiency of devices, security and privacy concerns, and others.
