Google Director, Russ Laraway, Named Senior Vice President of Merchant Sales at FreeMonee Network
June 01, 2012 11:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time
SAN MATEO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--FreeMonee Network, the world’s first and only gift incentive network, today announced that longtime Google Industry Director, Russ Laraway has joined the company as Senior Vice President of Merchant Sales. The addition of Russ to FreeMonee’s team of industry veterans is another step forward in the company’s growth and leadership of the gift incentive space for merchants.
“Russ was a major player at Google and really helped shape their success. He is a great addition to our seasoned management team”
In his new role, Russ will draw upon his nearly 20 years of sales, marketing, operations and entrepreneurial experience to grow and lead the merchant sales organization. His efforts will be focused on expanding the base of national and regional merchants currently participating in the FreeMonee Gift Network across 30 retail categories.
FreeMonee, which functions like a virtual gift card on an individual’s debit or credit card, allows consumers to purchase anything they want with the designated merchant, no strings attached. The company has experienced extraordinary growth since first launching to consumers in November 2011 and has already rolled out programs with four of the top eight card issuers in the U.S. Russ’ appointment and experience are instrumental to maintaining and building upon this momentum.
Throughout Russ’ seven years at Google, he led the company’s software and enterprise service advertising business in North America. He also launched and led the international sales and service operations for the AdSense product and subsequently helped to integrate Google’s $3.2B acquisition of DoubleClick. Russ joined Google from Pathfinders, a supply chain consulting company he co-founded, focused on helping mid-sized manufacturing companies become more efficient. Russ was one of just 20 people, out of 32,000, selected for the prestigious ‘Google Great Manager Award’ in 2011. He holds an MBA from the Wharton School of Business.
“FreeMonee is shaping the future of direct response marketing, and I am excited to be joining the company at such an important time for the industry,” explained newly appointed Russ Laraway. “The superior technology and massive reach of FreeMonee Network delivers profitable, incremental sales for merchants at scale. The momentum that FreeMonee Network has quickly achieved by delivering its gift incentives reminds me of the early days of search advertising. Opportunities like this don’t come along often, so I feel lucky to join.”
“Russ was a major player at Google and really helped shape their success. He is a great addition to our seasoned management team,” said Gadi Maier, CEO and President of FreeMonee. “I am confident that he will help us extend our lead in the rapidly expanding gift incentive space.”

Masabi Unveils App for Reading Smart Card Transport Tickets Using NFC-Enabled Phones
London, UK - 31st May 2012 - Masabi, a developer of mTicketing technology for the transport sector, today unveiled a proof-of-concept Android application called 'Smart Card Buddy Beta' that is capable of reading and displaying the contents of ITSO-based transport ticketing smart cards. This is the first application from Masabi's Beta Labs programme and the technology paves the way for smart card ticket validation on low-cost smartphone hardware and eventually allowing passengers to buy rail tickets or 'top-up' credit for their smart card on their handset rather than at an in-station terminal.
Although the proof of concept app is designed to operate with the ITSO smart card standard being used in the UK, it could be amended to be used with any NFC contactless technology. ITSO is the UK's national standard for enabling integrated and interoperable smart ticketing and is being employed by transport operators such as Go-Ahead, Stagecoach and Newport Transport as well as in schemes in Scotland, Wales, Greater Manchester, Leicestershire and Cheshire amongst others¹.
"Masabi's Smart card Buddy Beta has the potential to bridge two rapidly growing but separate technologies - mobile phones and smart cards. This proof of concept app shows that the new generation of NFC enabled smartphones can operate as ticket readers thereby letting passengers and inspectors check what's on a smart card without the need for specialist hardware. In the future, users could even buy tickets or credit for their smart card using their phone - this once again would limit queues at ticket machines and eliminate the complexity surrounding setting 'home stations' for smart card top ups," said Tom Godber, CTO of Masabi.
Masabi's mobile ticketing technology allows passengers to search for train times and buy tickets which can then be either picked-up at stations, displayed as an on-screen barcode or via in-built NFC. Its applications support the majority of mobile handsets and are currently offered by a dozen UK rail operators and ticket retailers including thetrainline.com, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry and Virgin Trains. It has also won its first contract outside the UK with the Massachusetts Bay Transport Authority (MBTA) which is set to launch in Q4.
About Masabi
Masabi is the leading developer of mobile ticketing technology for the transport sector. Its award-winning 'Ticket Machine in Your Pocket' applications signal the end of ticket queues by allowing passengers to quickly and securely buy and display tickets on most mobile phones. The company's technology allows transport operators to transform their passengers' travel experience while also dramatically expanding sales capacity without significantly increasing costs. Based in London, it has 35 employees and is backed by m8 Capital. For further information see www.masabi.com
