Sheila Bair, Former FDIC Chair, to Keynote at Fiserv Innovate 2011

  • Key bank regulator and credit union supporter to share insider perspectives on the financial crisis, financial legislation and future impacts
  • Bair is credited with developing innovative and stabilizing programs for credit markets, deposit insurance, and mortgage lending
  • Fiserv client conference for credit unions to be held Sept. 19-22 in Las Vegas
BROOKFIELD, Wis.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Fiserv, Inc. (NASDAQ: FISV), the leading global provider of financial services technology solutions, today announced that the Honorable Sheila C. Bair, former Chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), will deliver the keynote address at Innovate 2011, the annual client conference hosted by Credit Union Solutions from Fiserv. This will be one of her first public appearances since stepping down on July 8, 2011 upon completion of her five-year term.
“The full policy ramifications – who's paying for what, who's going to pay more and who's going to pay less under this – is something that maybe wasn't dealt with as thoroughly as it might have been”
As FDIC Chairman, Bair presided over a tumultuous period in the nation’s financial sector, working to bolster public confidence and system stability. In response to the financial crisis, she developed innovative and stabilizing programs that provided temporary liquidity guarantees to unfreeze credit markets and increased deposit insurance limits. In 2007, she was a singular–and prescient–advocate for systematic loan modifications to stem the coming tidal wave of foreclosures.
Fiserv Credit Union Solutions president, Mark Sievewright, welcomes Bair to the Innovate agenda, praising her effectiveness at the FDIC as well as her insight into financial regulation.
“Sheila Bair played a pivotal role in shaping measures designed to deal with the most significant financial crisis we have experienced since the Great Depression. We look forward to hearing her perspective on what happened and what is likely to happen next, especially given the more recent challenges in financial markets,” Sievewright said.
Bair was outspoken in supporting credit union concerns regarding debit card interchange fees. “The full policy ramifications – who's paying for what, who's going to pay more and who's going to pay less under this – is something that maybe wasn't dealt with as thoroughly as it might have been,” Bair told the Senate Banking Committee February 22. She also visited the student credit union at T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Va., last year to help launch a government initiative to improve financial literacy.
Bair received a number of prestigious honors during her tenure as FDIC Chairman. In 2008 and 2009, Forbes magazine named Bair as the second Most Powerful Woman in the world, after Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel. She is author of two books about money, both written for children, and is now writing an insider account of the recent financial crisis. Bull by the Horns: What Main Street Must Do to Fix Wall Street is slated for publication in 2012.
Innovate 2011, the credit union community’s largest technology-focused event, offers Fiserv client credit unions unmatched exposure to solutions and insights that are relevant, practical and responsive in today’s digital, connected world. Held at The Venetian in Las Vegas, September 19–22, Innovate gives Fiserv clients the opportunity to review market trends, talk with leading experts and explore integrated, results-oriented solutions.

HID Global Launches Next Generation Access Control Readers and Contactless Smart Cards

PRESS RELEASE
Aug. 30, 2011, 8:23 a.m. EDT

Groundbreaking iCLASS(R) SE(TM) Access Control Platform Leverages Company's New Secure Identity Object (SIO(TM)) Digital Credential Technology

IRVINE, Calif., Aug 30, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- HID Global, trusted leader in solutions for the delivery of secure identity, today announced the availability of its next generation access control readers and credentials based on the company's new iCLASS SIO technology-enabled (SE) platform. This platform initiates a significant transformation in how secure identity is delivered and managed by introducing technology-independent digital credentials that can be deployed for use on smart phones, microprocessor-based cards, contactless smart cards, USB tokens and related devices.
The iCLASS SE platform is an essential building block in the access control industry's first Near Field Communication (NFC)-enabled mobile identity and access management solutions, now being developed by various HID Global partners. Based on open standards to support a wide array of smart card technologies, HID Global's new access control platform supports iCLASS, MIFARE(R) DESFire(R) EV1 and other contactless smart card technologies. It extends physical access control beyond traditional cards and readers to enable deployment of mobile access with digital credentials. To accommodate constantly evolving security challenges, iCLASS SE provides users with the ability to dynamically increase security levels via simple firmware updates and efficiently address future changes in requirements as they occur.
"The introduction of our new iCLASS SIO technology-enabled product line is the tangible result of HID's unique understanding of the access control industry and the partnerships we've formed over the years with users, security consultants, system software developers and OEM manufacturers," said Dr. Selva Selvaratnam, senior vice president and chief technology officer with HID Global. "iCLASS SE also represents a significant milestone in the advancement of our secure identity strategy, because it provides a standards-based platform for implementing exciting new applications for NFC-enabled mobile phones."
Technical Details
HID Global's iCLASS SE access control platform is based on a combination of Secure Identity Object (SIO) technology on the credential side and the SIO Processor(TM) on the reader side which perform similar functions to traditional cards and readers, except they use a standards-based, technology-independent and flexible identity data structure that provides a new level of security, portability and performance.
SIO digital credentials operate within HID Global's Trusted Identity Platform(R) (TIP(TM)) framework, which is designed to support a secure and trusted boundary for cryptographic key delivery in SIO technology-based access control applications. The TIP framework facilitates secure provisioning of SIO digital credentials on a variety of credential platforms, including mobile devices, no matter where users are located or how they are connected. SIO digital credentials also support data authenticity and privacy while inhibiting data cloning by binding information to a specific credential for additional authentication and encryption on top of device-specific security. These SIO digital credentials features enable the iCLASS SE platform to improve security in traditional card and reader applications while enabling new market opportunities for carrying secure portable credentials on NFC smart phones and other devices.
Product Information
HID Global's next generation platform 13.56 MHz smart cards and readers include:
iCLASS SE Readers:
-- Feature multi-layered security with a tamper-proof design using EAL5+-certified secure element hardware to protect keys and cryptographic operations for additional identity data security. The field-programmable readers also feature energy-efficient intelligent power management and use recycled content to help attain LEED credits.
-- Available in two configurations: iCLASS SIO technology-enabled (SE) readers, and multiCLASS SE(TM) readers that enable seamless migration by supporting multiple credential technologies including 125 kHz HID Prox, Indala(R) Prox, AWID and EM4102.
SIO Technology-Enabled Digital Credentials:
-- iCLASS SE Cards: Available in 2k-bit, 16k-bit or 32k-bit versions. Users can add a magnetic stripe/barcode and anti-counterfeiting features including custom artwork and photo IDs.
-- iCLASS SE Clamshell Cards: Feature an ABS shell construction for durability in harsh environments.
-- SIO-Enabled (SE) Cards for MIFARE: Use mutual authentication and data encryption with a 32-bit serial number, and feature securely separated sectors to allow complex applications and enable future expansion.
-- SIO-Enabled (SE) Cards for MIFARE DESFire EV1: Available in PVC and Composite PET/PVC construction, they can accept embedded contact chips for logical access and biometric ID systems. Custom programming with Indala formats is also available.
Tools for Developers
Additionally, HID Global has introduced the SIO Processor(TM) Developer Tool Kit (DTK) for developing products to the iCLASS SE platform. The SIO Processor DTK supports the development of new SE credentials based on technologies including iCLASS SE, iCLASS Elite(TM) and MIFARE Classic, as well as standard iCLASS to provide compatibility with existing installations or card deployments. Developers have several options for embedding the SIO Processor into new and existing card and reader designs as well as an emerging class of portable digital credentials for NFC-based phones and other platforms.
Availability
HID Global's iCLASS SE and multiCLASS SE readers, iCLASS SE, iCLASS SE clamshell, SIO-enabled(SE) for MIFARE and MIFARE DESFire EV1 credentials are available now. The SIO Processor is available to early access customers. SHAZAM Supports Adaptive Payments' Pentagon Mobile Payment Technology

DES MOINES, Iowa and FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla.Aug. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The SHAZAM Network today announced in partnership with Adaptive Payments development of a new mobile POS application known as Pentagon. Pentagon is a mobile payments platform, which allows merchants to accept mobile PIN- and signature-based transactions using an iPhone®. SHAZAM will make the technology available to its nearly 1,500 community financial institutions and its merchant customer base.
The technology that supports the Pentagon mobile payments application is unique to the marketplace as it uses Adaptive Payments' 5DSecure™  five factor, dual channel authentication technology to authenticate PIN debit transactions quickly and securely. The Pentagon solution is capable of accepting and processing signature-based credit and debit transactions in addition to PIN debit, and is a first in the industry to promote a mobile device capable of processing both types of transactions securely. To further strengthen security, Pentagon uses 3DES to encrypt the mag stripe right at the read head. The transaction produces a Regulation E-compliant receipt that is delivered to consumers via SMS text message. Unlike some other mobile payment providers in this space that disintermediate existing relationships, Pentagon is "an open platform" specifically designed to be accessible to all merchant acquirer processors, allowing financial institutions to use the product without changing processors and to customize it to "make it their own."
"Adaptive Payments' Pentagon technology is taking mobile payments to a new level of convenience and security," said Mike Hollinger, SHAZAM president and CEO. "Merchants of all types and sizes will be able to quickly, cost-effectively and securely accept electronic payments anytime, anywhere using their mobile phone." Adaptive Payments is a strategic partner of SHAZAM, and an important merchant acquiring distribution channels for the next generation of mobile payment technologies.
"We are particularly proud of the security that we built into our Pentagon platform," said Shashi Kapur, Adaptive Payments CEO.  "We are an authentication company first and foremost, and adding PIN debit acceptance and PAN encryption to our mobile payment platform combined with our open platform approach is something that sets us apart from the rest. As payments continue to evolve from traditional card present and card not present environments to increasingly more mobile and online environments and new channels and devices that are sure to come, payment security and peace of mind for all stakeholders will be a key factor in separating those companies and applications that are successful from those that are not."
"SHAZAM especially likes the PIN debit functionality. PIN debit is more secure for cardholders and provides lower fraud risk for financial institutions and merchants," stated Hollinger. "Our financial institutions will benefit by allowing their cardholders to conduct secure PIN transactions practically anywhere they go."
In September 2010, SHAZAM and Adaptive Payments partnered to provide Internet PIN debit processing and gateway services for financial institutions across the nation. SHAZAM and Adaptive Payments are also working together on a Person-to-Person (P2P) solution, assisting financial institutions' customers in transferring funds directly from one person to another, most commonly using mobile technology in real time. In January 2011, SHAZAM made a strategic investment in the payment authentication company, and the two companies have partnered to expand access for financial institution customers to multiple payment options through multiple channels, without sacrificing security or functionality.
Kapur added, "We continue to benefit from our partnership with SHAZAM, not just in financial terms, but also from a consultative point of view by helping us navigate complex regulations and work directly with us and their customers to validate new concepts."
About Adaptive Payments
Based in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Adaptive Payments is a payment authentication company that enables easy, safe, secure, and authenticated transactions to occur using the cardholder's PIN or other data that is known to the cardholder to authenticate debit and credit transactions.
