The number of people buying products online will grow by more than five million between 2009 and 2013, according to digital intelligence group eMarketer.

Perhaps highlighting the importance of being optimized online, the firm expects that the number of online buyers in 2013 will total 31.8 million.

Developing strong e-marketing strategies and working on search engine optimization (SEO) could benefit companies which want to tap into this growing internet-based consumer market.

Meanwhile, eMarketer states that some 72.5 per cent of UK internet users will purchase at least one item via the web in 2009.

Karin von Abrams, senior analyst at the digital intelligence group and author of the report UK E-Commerce: Fighting the Downturn, claims: "The growing ranks of online buyers are prompting many UK [e-retailers] to raise their game ... despite pressure on budgets."

Search engines remain the best source of traffic for ecommerce websites, according to Screen Pages, which indicated that 63 per cent of traffic came through this route between January and June 2009.
