VENDORCOM HOSTS THE PAYMENT WORLD’S PARTY OF PARTIES AT THE GHERKIN
Almost 300 people from across the global payments industry gathered at the Gherkin in London last Tuesday evening to network, share expertise and compare industry experiences.
London, 27 October, 2011 – Card schemes, issuers, acquirers, payment processors, software and hardware vendors and retailers from across the globe including Europe, The Americas and Asia were brought together by Vendorcom, The Cards & Payments Community at this exclusive event.
The event provided a chance for Vendorcom members and guests to enjoy the party whilst debating the big issues that the payments industry is facing as we approach 2012.
PCI compliance was one of the hot topics discussed. Darren Grady from HSBC Merchant Services said: “Most retailers are aware that they have to comply but many aren’t going to be compliant in time.”
KK Man from Trustwave added: “A lot of retailers don’t realise that PCI compliance within third party solutions providers is their responsibility.”
Another of the big issues discussed on the night was mobile payments. Whilst most agreed that this technology was a welcome addition to the payments market, there was some scepticism about rolling out the technology before data ownership issues have been resolved.
Grady warned: “Fraudsters these days don’t just want money; they want whole identities. By having everything on a mobile handset we are potentially making it easier for them.”
Tony Matthews from Ascentor warned: “Clarity is needed in terms of who is going to be responsible for the data.”
Others were more upbeat, Carl Persson from Verisec said: “I will use my mobile to make payments, but it will only be used for small payments, I wouldn’t make big purchases using it, this isn’t what it is for.”
John Stuart from Alaric added: “Yes I would use it, we have a lot of customers who specialise in mobile payments so I am confident it is safe.”
Timed to coincide with the annual PCI Security Standards Council community meeting in Europe, the ‘Party of Parties’ gave lots of companies the chance to host their own party as part of the overall Vendorcom event. In previous years several social events have competed at scattered locations but this year Vendorcom brought everyone together under one roof.
Paul Rodgers Chairman of Vendorcom said: “We’ve worked hard to put on a high quality event that has allowed the key players in the cards and payments industry to come together, demonstrating that when we collaborate, we can deliver a great deal more than any one company could on its own. It’s been a great evening for the industry.”
The event was sponsored by HSBC Merchant Services, Ingenico and Voltage Security. With a standby list of over 100 people, this was a popular event. Some of the lucky attendees included British Airways, Vodafone Group, Barclaycard, WorldPay, Tesco and Tiffany & Co.
Darren Grady from HSBC Merchant Services said about the event: “It is an amazing venue; this has been a great event for everyone in payments.”
