Very Important Report On: Apple, AuthenTec, and NXP Semiconductors

AdvertisementWe create and build industry-related "breaking news" websites. Our "NewsBots" search for breaking news on keywords relating to your industry. Any vertical, any niche, any subject and we can build it for you.

Example: Take a look at the "Breaking News Site" we built for the NBA's Miami Heat. NBANewsHeat.com Our NewsBots look for keywords (Lebron James, Dywane Wade, Chris Bosh, etc.) Once the breaking news story is found, it sends it to our server, which transforms it into a Post containing the title, a photo, author credit, 25 word blurb and a direct link to the original content provider. Better than the Drudge Report, and not limited to the political arena.

New York, NY -- (SBWIRE) -- 07/30/2012 -- AuthenTec Inc. (NASDAQ: AUTH), a provider of a series of products including fingerprint sensors, software and intellectual property that offer security, convenience, personalization and navigation features in such end-use products as personal computers (PCs), tablets, smartphones, printers, network servers and gateways, last week, disclosed in a SEC filing that it agreed to be acquired by Apple Inc. ( Find out more about AAPL here: http://www.stockreports.net/market-scan/?symbol=AAPL)

AAPL will acquire the Melbourne, Florida-based company for $8 per share, which represents a premium of nearly 60% over AUTH’s closing price on July 26th, 2012, the day before the deal was disclosed.

AuthenTech has been expanding its fingerprint sensors technology for use on smartphones and tablets. With consumers using their smartphones for more and more daily activities, Apple has been increasing its efforts to show that its devices are safe from malware and other threats. Also, with the iPhone and the iPad gaining popularity with business customers, Apple has been looking to strengthen its digital security capabilities.

According to Raymond James analyst J. Steven Smigie, as cellphones become essentially credit cards, consumers will look to secure them in the event of theft or loss and AUTH’s fingerprint sensors offer one way to secure handsets.

The acquisition is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2012, according to the filing from AuthenTec. In case, AUTH accepts a superior bid, the company will be required to pay Apple a breakup fee of $10.95 million. (Find out more about AUTH here: http://www.stockreports.net/market-scan/?symbol=AUTH)

Although it is not clear what Apple’s plans are with AUTH, it is likely that the company may use the fingerprint sensor technology as it looks to enable its phones to make payments. Already devices running on Android systems have started to come with a wireless technology that allows phones to make payments with a tap of a reader. Apple’s recent patent filings show interest in this technology, called near-field communications. However, it is not clear whether the next version of the iPhone, which is expected to be launched this fall, will have this technology. The acquisition of AuthenTec, though, suggests that Apple may soon introduce near-field communications technology in its devices.

AuthenTec’s acquisition does highlight the growing importance of near field communications. Devices enabled with near field communications technology can be used for contactless payment systems, which are similar to those used in credit cards and electronic ticket smartcards at the moment. As more and more people switch to smartphones, near field communications technology is expected to become increasingly important.

Near field communication offers secure, short-range communication between electronic devices, including mobile phones, PDAs, computers and payments terminals through a fast and simple wireless connection.

Through near field communication technology, users can make several contactless transactions including those for mobile payment, transit and ticket purchase, and top-up.

On company that focuses on the near field communications technology Mobile Integrated Systems Inc. (OTCBB: MIBI), which is engaged in the development and deployment of mobile products and transaction systems to a variety of industry sectors including lotteries, gaming, transportation, telecommunications and finance.

Recently, MIBI and Quantitative Alpha Trading Inc. recently announced the execution of a binding term sheet under which MIBI will acquire all outstanding common shares of Quantitative Alpha Trading in exchange for 60,189,332 shares of MIBI common stock. Another company looking to capitalize on increasing importance of near field communications technology is NXP Semiconductor N.V. (NASDAQ: NXPI), a semiconductor company providing solutions that are used in a range of automotive, identification, wireless infrastructure, lighting, industrial, mobile, consumer and computing applications.

NXPI, which is the co-inventor of near field communication technology, supports more than 150 near field communication trials globally and is the leading near field communication partner in commercial solutions for enabling mobile transactions and ticketing.

NXPI provides a wide range of high quality, high performance near field communication controllers that add near filed communication capability to several consumer electronic devices using the most widely deployed contactless communication protocols.

Late last month, NXPI announced that the newly launched Nexus 7 will feature its PN65 NFC solution to offer an amazing mobile user experience.

Ruediger Stroh, Executive Vice President and General Manager, Identification Business at NXP Semiconductors, said that following NXPI’s successes with Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus and smartphones in general, NXPI is proud to also be the NFC technology partner for Google’s first NFC-enabled tablet.

Stroh said that NXPI is seeing more mobile devices including tablets integrating secure NFC technology to create richer user experiences and convenient mobile transactions and as an integral part of revolutionary products like Google Nexus Tablet, NXPI is continuing to drive broader consumer adoption of NFC.
