Tabbedout Continues Expansion; Brings Mobile Payment to Seattle

Consumers can now pay tabs with their phones in local bars and restaurants

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Seattle residents no longer have to worry about leaving a credit card at a bar or waiting to close their tab. Tabbedout, the mobile payment solution that enables customers to pay their bar or restaurant tab with their phone, has launched service in nearly 30 locations throughout Seattle, with more locations coming soon. Seattle is the latest market in which this Austin, TX-based company has expanded service.
“Tabbedout has resonated with our guests by providing an easy and interesting way to monitor and close their tabs when they prefer”
Available for free on both iPhone and Android smartphones, the Tabbedout app was built by security experts who understand the value of a good time. Tabbedout allows users to store credit or debit card information directly on their phone, encrypted and under passphrase protection, instead of on host servers or in “the cloud.” Seattle consumers are safe from the threat of stolen identity due to lost or forgotten credit cards since they now can open and pay their tab directly from their phone, without handing their payment information to a server.
In addition to security, Tabbedout users get the convenience of no longer having to wait in line while closing their tab. They can simply pay from their phone whenever they want, wherever they want Tabbedout allows customers to view a running tab of what they’ve ordered throughout the night, removing any buzz-kill surprises the next day.
“Tabbedout has resonated with our guests by providing an easy and interesting way to monitor and close their tabs when they prefer,” said Rich Fox, managing partner of Poquitos in Capitol Hill. “Interestingly, it has also brought an additional layer of interaction and familiarity between our staff members and Tabbedout users so that the overall experience has become more personal, rather than less so.”
Tabbedout also allows customers to share the party with their friends: the app is socially integrated, so customers can share their bar or restaurant experiences or “check-in” to venues via their Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare accounts without ever leaving the application.
“We want to make life easier—and more fun—for merchants and patrons alike, putting the consumer in control of how and when they pay. This gives merchants the freedom to focus on serving more people, especially during peak business hours,” said Rick Orr, Tabbedout CEO. “Seattle has a booming nightlife and the locals here embrace new technologies—it’s an ideal city for Tabbedout’s service.”

CARTES Brings its Industry Leading Smart Card and Identification Event to North America in 2012

CARTES in North America will gather international payment, mobility and digital security experts in banking, retail, transportation, telecommunications and government
CARTES in North America 2012
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The impact that smart cards, mobile payment applications, and new identification and secure access technologies hold in fostering new business growth and creating new industry sectors, will be on the main agenda at the CARTES in North America expo & conference. Scheduled for March 5-7, 2012 in Las Vegas, Nev., CARTES in North America will bring together international smart card, mobility and digital security experts to explore the latest technologies and market trends.
“We aim to be the place in North America the industry gathers to see the latest innovations in the market, exchange new ideas and make new business connections.”
Capitalizing on its 26 years of smart card event expertise in Europe with CARTES & IDentification, Comexposium is introducing its newest event featuring 10 educational sessions with more than 100 presenters and 100 exhibitors. The three-day event will address the topics, trends and technologies to facilitate new business in the large and dynamic North American market for innovative payment solutions, identification and digital security. Comexposium will launch the CARTES in North America conference at CARTES & IDentification in Paris on November 16 with a keynote presentation, “Payment Trends 2011 from Silicon Valley,” by Daniel Chatelain, managing director of The BayPay Forum, one of the event partners.
North America is the largest market worldwide for payment cards. According to The Nilson Report, the North American region (U.S. and Canada) generates more than 39% of all credit and debit card spending worldwide versus other regions, including Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East-Africa and Latin America. This 39 percent share translated to $3.732 trillion in spending at merchants in 2010. Near Field Communication is also a growing market for smart technologies including payment. Juniper Research predicts that North America will account for half of the almost 300 million NFC capable smart phones in the market by 2014. The firm also forecasts that NFC payments and retail marketing capability via coupons and smart posters will become common among smart phone users in Western Europe, North America and other developed regions.
“The announcement by Visa to accelerate EMV migration in the U.S. and the growth of NFC-based mobile payment with Google wallet and the ISIS project offer expanding business opportunities,” said Isabelle Alfano, event director of Cartes in North America. “We aim to be the place in North America the industry gathers to see the latest innovations in the market, exchange new ideas and make new business connections.”

The average annual percentage rate (APR) reached 14.99 percent, just one tenth of a percentage point shy of the national APR average record high, which was set in October.
This week's move was spurred by USAA, which increased the APR offered for its USAA World MasterCard. The interest rate was 8.90 percent to 25.90 percent; it is now 9.90 percent to 25.90 percent.
USAA wasn't the only one tweaking rates.  Another change in Libor -- the British equivalent of the U.S. federal funds rate -- prompted an APR increase for the Cabela's Club Visa, Cabela's Chief Financial Officer Kevin Werts said. The APR offered was 9.99 percent to 18.23 percent. It is now 9.99 percent to 18.24 percent.
The CreditCards.com credit card rate survey (permalink: http://www.creditcards.com/rate-report) is conducted weekly, using offer data from the leading U.S. card issuers' websites. Introductory offer periods and regular interest rates will vary with applicants' credit quality and issuer risk-based pricing policies.
