New Design Options for Engaging Consumer Experiences

SANTA ANA, Calif. and ISMANING, Germany, April 10, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Identive Group, Inc. (Nasdaq:INVE) (Frankfurt:INV), a provider of products and services for the identification, security and RFID industries, today announced the newest additions to its NFC tag product line – NFC window stickers and magnets for high-impact, fun consumer experiences.
The new NFC window stickers are ideally suited for information pick-up, social media check-in and coupon applications. A unique process creates double-sided, high-resolution color tags that display the same high-quality visual image when entering or exiting a place of business. By concealing the smart NFC inlays, Identive's NFC window tags and stickers offer aesthetically pleasing design options to attract users' attention from both sides of the window.
Identive's NFC window stickers are backed by a powerful personalization capability with the option of incorporating sequential colored QR Codes to both sides of the sticker. By adding color to QR Codes, customers can now design artwork to match their brands, while keeping the highest scan accuracy and allowing users without NFC-enabled phones to engage with the stickers through the QR code. The data on the sticker is stored both in the QR Code and with the appropriate NFC Data Exchange Format message in the selected NFC chip, providing consumers with NFC mobile phones the fuller, richer NFC experience.
"By combining the power of NFC technology with our attractive stickers and magnetized NFC tags, Identive is offering a whole new way for future-minded retailers and business-savvy companies to communicate with their customers," said David Holmes vice president of Mobility & NFC Solutions for Identive. "With enhanced NFC tag application possibilities in the real world, Identive is taking the lead to build out the NFC infrastructure."
Identive's NFC magnets offer high-impact branding opportunities for retailers, providing an attractive and distinctive take-home ad that allows consumers to order food, redeem coupons, watch videos, check in and much more, with a simple tap.
Scott Austin, Identive's vice president International sales for Transponders, noted, "The new NFC magnets are based on Identive's patented TOM® (Tag On Metal) technology which enables NFC tags to be read by any handset, on any surface. The NFC magnets are less than 1 mm thick and come with high definition, full color printing, QR Codes and QR+."
Identive's NFC window stickers and magnets will be on display in several upcoming industry tradeshows and conferences, including WIMA NFC in Monaco April 11-13, EuroID in Berlin April 24-26 and Cards & Payments in Asia, taking place in Singapore April 25-27. Hidden Bank Fees Cost Consumers Up To 10 Cents Extra at Gas Pump, New Study Finds

WASHINGTONApril 9, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --  Your bank has its hands in your pocket at the gas pump, and you don't even know it.
new study by the National Association of Convenience Stores found that drivers are paying 6 to 10 centsa gallon in hidden bank fees every time they gas up.
To make matters worse, the banks' "swipe" fee goes up inexorably with the price of gas, even though your bank is doing nothing extra to process your debit or credit card transaction.
These "swipe" fees are what your bank charges the store to process your transaction. You may not know about them, but the convenience-store owner does.
All kinds of card fees, including swipe fees, are set in secret by Visa and MasterCard. They have grown to be the owner's largest operating expense after labor – more than rent, more than utilities. Convenience stores paid more than $11 billion in card fees last year, a jump of almost 25 percent and an amount almost 90 percent greater than their profits.
"These fees have come to be a tremendous burden on convenience stories, most of which are run by small business people," saidLyle Beckwith, senior vice president of government relations for the National Association of Convenience Stores. "In many cases, the banks are profiting more from the sale of gas than our members."
As gas goes to $4 in some markets, the bank's average cut of swipe fees alone increases to 7 cents, if you pay with a debit card and up to 10 cents with a credit card.
You pay the extra money even if you pay cash because the credit card companies' rules push the merchant to pass along the costs to everyone, not just customers who pay with plastic.
The study also found that gas prices increased 80 percent between 2004 and 2011. Card fees rose 180 percent. In other words, even when gas prices level off, the bank fees continue to rise.
Because credit-card fees are fixed in secret by a duopoly of MasterCard and Visa, they always are on the increase, to the point where they are now the highest in the industrialized world.
For a copy of the report, "Hidden Bank Fees Siphon Money from Customers and Merchants at the Pump," click here.
The National Association of Convenience Stores is a member of the Merchants Payments Coalition (MPC) - UnfairCreditCardFees.com.  MPC is a group of retailers, supermarkets, drug stores, convenience stores, fuel stations, on-line merchants and other businesses who are fighting against unfair credit card fees and fighting for a more competitive and transparent card system that works better for consumers and merchants alike. The coalition's member associations collectively represent about 2.7 million stores with approximately 50 million employees.

ShopSmart Shares the Rewards (and Risks) of Store Cards

YONKERS, N.Y.April 9, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Retailer credit cards can have big payoffs or pitfalls, so it's important to understand new twists and terms before you sign up.  The May 2012 issue of ShopSmart magazine, from the publisher of Consumer Reports, takes a close look at new card offerings including store debit cards and lower interest rates, as well as a sampling of generous store cards and the benefits they offer.
"Retailer cards are very tempting – it can be hard to say 'no' when you're standing at the register and the clerk tells you about a sign-up discount and hands you a card application," said Lisa Lee Freeman, editor-in-chief of ShopSmart. "But it's important to understand exactly what it is that you're signing up for. We took a look at some new offerings and their gotchas and compiled a list of some very generous cards."
What's New in Store Cards
Retailer-branded debit cards.  The first store cards were charge cards that could be used only at the retailer that issued it. Next, many retailers started issuing cobranded credit cards that can be used anywhere, and they let you earn points on all of your purchases. Now some retailers, such as Nordstrom and Target, offer a store debit card, which links to your checking account.
What you need to know: You probably don't want to get one of the new cards if you often overdraw your account and rely on your bank's overdraft-protection program. If you go over your balance using a retailer's debit card, you'll not only owe a fee to that retailer but you'll owe one to your bank. To avoid the fee frenzy, opt out of your bank's debit overdraft protection. If you go over your balance, your transaction will simply be rejected.
Lower interest rates.  Although interest rates on many store cards used to be sky-high, some are now lower than the average bank credit-card rate, which was recently about 14 percent.
What you need to know: Those low rates are only given to the most creditworthy customers. If your credit is less than stellar, you could be charged 20 percent or more.
Cards that finance only big purchases.  These cards are issued by home-improvement and electronics stores, such as Amazon.com, Apple, Best Buy, Home Depot, and Lowe's. Most offer from six months to a year of 0 percent financing on your purchase, though some go even longer.
What you need to know: These cards will help you spread out payments, which might be less of a budget buster. The catch: If you don't pay the entire balance by the end of the interest-free period, you'll be charged interest retroactively to the date of purchase.
Fantastic Plastic
Below is a sampling of some of the store cards highlighted in the May issue of ShopSmart and some of the benefits they offer. Keep in mind that perks can depend on how much you spend and the interest rate might vary given your credit worthiness. Read the agreement, and be selective, especially if you are about to apply for a loan. Signing up for too many cards can ding your credit score.
Best Cards for Cash Back
Costco American ExpressAPR: 0 percent for 6 months, then 15.24 percent.
Perks: 3 percent back on gas purchases up to $3,000 a year, 1 percent on higher amounts; 2 percent at restaurants, and 1 percent on other purchases, including at Costco.
Amazon.comAPR: 13.24, 18.24, or 21.24 percent.
Perks: $30 sign-up bonus. Three points back on your Amazon purchases, two points back at gas stations, restaurants, and drugstores; one point elsewhere. Take rewards as cash back, gift cards, or in Amazon points.
Best Cards for Discount ShoppersJCPenney: APR: 26.99 percent.
Perks: 20 percent off your first purchase. One point for every dollar spent. Monthly double-point bonus events.
TargetAPR: 22.9 percent.
Perks: 5 percent off every time you shop. Extra prescription discounts. After filling five prescriptions, coupon for 5 percent off a future shopping trip.

Two-Tier Pricing Options Help USA Technologies’ Customers Accelerate Adoption of Cashless Payment Solutions

MALVERN, Pa.--()--USA Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: USAT), (“USAT”), a leader of wireless, cashless payment and M2M telemetry solutions for small-ticket, self-serve retailing industries, today announced that data from its customer Knowledge Base shows that its recently introduced Two-Tier Pricing Program (“Two-Tier”) can be a valuable tool in moving the small-ticket industry to cashless payments. More specifically, cashless sales and usage data extracted from a diverse sample of USAT’s Two-Tier customer base, showed greater sales activity in the two weeks after deployment of the Two-Tier Pricing Program than before—an important insight for customers waiting to gauge the effect of two-tier on consumer behavior.
“USAT is committed to helping customers accelerate their adoption of cashless technologies—consumers are asking for cashless options and mobile trends only make the investment more compelling”
“These recent findings should help alleviate customer concerns about declining cashless sales with a two-tier pricing strategy,” said Michael Lawlor, Senior Vice President of Sales and Business Development for USA Technologies. “USA Technologies has been watching consumer response very closely. We knew our Two-Tier Pricing Program would be popular with our vending customers looking for ways to offset the processing costs associated with cashless transactions. Not only does USA Technologies’ Two-Tier Pricing Program give them the ability to do that, but now we have positive information about the consumer response to two-tier pricing that we believe strengthens the case for further expansion of cashless payments in vending.”
USA Technologies’ Two-Tier Pricing Program gives operators of small-ticket, unattended terminals like vending machines the ability to charge two different vend prices—the standard retail price for credit/debit transactions and a lower discounted price for cash purchases—allowing operators to offset the cost of card processing. As an extension of USAT’s ePort Connect® service offering, operators have the ability to adjust prices by account or by machine, utilizing USAT’s over-the-air-update system. ePort Connect is USAT’s one-stop suite of services for unattended, small-ticket cashless transactions that currently includes card processing, merchant account services, wireless connectivity, DEX data transfer, online sales reporting, settlement services, level 1 PCI-compliant data security, over-the-air updates and machine health alerts.
In evaluating the impact that the Two-Tier Pricing Program has had on consumer behavior, USA Technologies collected sample data from existing cashless terminals (approximately 450 terminals) that adopted the Two-Tier Pricing since it was first offered by USAT in early 2012. Key metrics were tracked, per terminal, for the two weeks before and after deployment of USAT’s Two-Tier Pricing Program to gauge the impact two-tier pricing was having on cashless sales and usage. For the two weeks post deployment, USAT discovered that the percentage of cashless sales to total sales grew. In addition, cashless vends, in total, grew.
“We already know that a cashless payment offering can boost total sales and average price per transaction—explaining those benefits wasn’t our goal here,” added Jim Turner, USA Technologies’ VP of Deployment Services. “Rather, we wanted to use our Knowledge Base to address the perception that cashless sales would go down under a two-tier model. This information is what many of our customers have been waiting for as they continue to evaluate when and where to deploy cashless solutions into their existing base of vending machines. The good news here is that cashless sales still appear to be trending up post Two-Tier deployment. And, since a two-tier pricing strategy enables operators to cover the cost of fees associated with processing card transactions, the cashless business case is now stronger for an even larger population of deployed machines.”
“USAT is committed to helping customers accelerate their adoption of cashless technologies—consumers are asking for cashless options and mobile trends only make the investment more compelling,” concluded Lawlor. “USAT’s Two-Tier Pricing Program clearly strengthens the business case for operators and, using data we collect through our extensive Knowledge Base, we can help our customers make the right cashless decision for their particular industry, location or demographic. In the end, going cashless needs to be as good for our customers as it is for today’s consumer.”
To learn more about USA Technologies’ Two-Tier Pricing Program, visit the ePort Connect section of www.usatech.com under the Products & Services tab.
