Credit Suisse: Apple Potential ‘Game Changer’ in Mobile Payments

Credit Suisse equity research analysts James Kissane and Moshe Orenbuch and colleagues today ponder the take-aways from a conference held last week by the bank to discuss the “future of payments,” by which they mean electronic and mobile payments.
Mobile payments are a roughly $500 billion opportunity, the conference participants believe, and a turf battle between existing transaction processors such as MasterCard (MA) and upstarts such as eBay‘s (EBAY) PayPal will be a big feature on the landscape.
Overall, it’s going to take time, write the authors:
Gating factors include: chicken and egg network phenomena; a compelling value proposition for merchants and consumers; business models and standards have to shakeout. There seemed to be a consensus that over the next 2-3 years we would start to see meaningful POS mobile payment volume.
Kissane and colleagues think Apple (AAPL) is a potential “game changer” in mobile payments, and write that all eyes are on the company’s next move. The company unveiled on Monday a forthcoming program for its iPhone called PassBook that will group coupons, loyalty cards, boarding passes and other consumer retail items that could be scanned for payment at a point of sale:

Forbes: A Samsung Intern May Have Cracked One Of The Mobile Industry's Biggest Problems

Samsung wants consumers to help it build a ubiquitous near-field communication infrastructure, one tiny sticker at a time.
"The vice president of portfolio marketing for Samsung had a challenging assignment: figure out a way to make use of a technology known as near field communication (NFC) that doesn’t involve payments.
Not an easy task. NFC has long been regarded by cynics as the Brazil of mobile technologies: it’s the future… and always will be. The technology lets smartphones and other devices communicate with each other by holding them near each other. To put it crudely, think of it a smart, two-way version of the radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags widely used today.
That could unlock a dizzying array of new applications involving payments, user authentication, and communication. The problem: while Samsung is pushing NFC in its phones, including its new flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S III, no one has bothered building an infrastucture to support NFC because, well, no one uses it yet.
Medin’s proposal, put into action by Samsung Senior Product Manager Fred Zimbric, may have cracked that chicken-and-egg problem. TecTiles, launched Wednesday, are smart stickers that customers can program with their Samsung smartphones and use to automate a broad range of tasks. The phone’s alarm can be set by tapping it to the nightstand, for example. A user can send a text message to his wife reading ‘I’m headed home now’ on the way out of the office by tapping a sticker on his desk.
Samsung is basically letting consumers build their own personalized NFC infrastructure. The price is right: the TecTiles will sell for $14.99 for a pack of five from AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile. DeCarlo is hoping that Samsung’s bottom up approach will encourage small businesses to help build out an infrastructure fo the technology, too.

Global Payments Reports Progress of Continuing Investigation

ATLANTA, June 12, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Global Payments Inc. (NYSE: GPN), a leader in payment processing services, previously announced that it had identified and self-reported unauthorized access into its processing system.
Based on the investigation to date, the Company continues to believe that a limited portion of its North American card processing system was affected. As discussed in our earlier announcement, the Company's continuing forensic investigation confirms that actual card numbers that may have been exported did not exceed 1,500,000.  The Company has, however, provided a larger quantity of card numbers to industry brands to enable them to proactively monitor cardholder activity.  The evidence continues to indicate that the potential card exportation was limited to Track 2 data.
The Company's ongoing investigation recently revealed potential unauthorized access to servers containing personal information collected from a subset of merchant applicants.  It is unclear whether the intruders looked at or took any personal information from the Company's systems; however, the Company will notify potentially-affected individuals in the coming days with helpful information and make available credit monitoring and identity protection insurance at no cost.  The notifications are unrelated to cardholder data and pertain to individuals associated with a subset of the Company's U.S. merchant applicants.
The Company believes that this incident is contained.  The Company has made substantial progress in its investigation and remediation efforts and plans to provide additional information regarding the potential financial impact, the PCI compliance process and the status of the investigation not later than its July 26, 2012 year-end earnings call.
Paul R. Garcia, Chairman and CEO of Global Payments, said "We sincerely apologize for this incident and are working diligently to conclude our investigation.  We are committed to fully resolve any issues arising from this matter and we, of course, continue to provide uninterrupted transaction processing for our customers worldwide."
Additional information is available at www.2012infosecurityupdate.com.
Global Payments will hold a conference call for shareholders on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at 6:00 PM EDT.  Callers may access the conference call via the investor relations page of the Company's website at www.globalpaymentsinc.com by clicking the "webcast" button; or callers in North America may dial 1-877-717-3042 and callers outside North America may dial 1-706-758-8809.  A pass code is not required.
