iGR Research Finds That 71 Percent of Mobile Device Sales in May Were Smartphones

Consumer Research Shows That Smartphone Purchase Intenders Are Willing to Pay $11 More for an Apple iPhone Compared to Android

AUSTIN, TX, May 23, 2012 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX) -- In 2012, it is hard to imagine life without a smartphone which provide constant connectivity to email, music, social networks, and much more, from just about any location. As such, U.S. consumers are increasingly interested in smartphones and have, or plan to, purchase such devices. In order to understand more about current smartphone buying trends, iGR conducted a major survey of consumers in May 2012.
Consumers indicated that approximately 28 percent of the mobile handsets they purchased recently were basic mobile phones and 71 percent were smartphones. Close to 69 percent of the handsets they plan to buy in the future are likely to be smartphones.
The majority of consumers who recently purchased a handset (of any type) reported a mean overall handset purchase price of approximately $114.23 (weighted). Similarly, the majority of consumers who plan to buy any type of handset in the near future plan to spend on average approximately $127.25 (weighted).
When iGR examined the price the respondents were willing to pay for a smartphone, the survey showed that consumers were on average willing to pay $135.90 for an Apple iPhone compared to $124.65 for an Android device. Thus, despite the range of Android smartphones available across all price points, Apple is able to command an average of $11 higher price per device.
"Smartphones have become the new norm," said Iain Gillott, president and founder of iGR, a market research consultancy focused on the wireless & mobile industry. "60 percent of the survey respondents iGR interviewed reported using a smartphone." And while smartphone users do tend to be younger (below 45), that demographic is shifting as smartphones become more common and more appealing to older consumers. Indeed, the purchasing demographic must shift in the next few years in order for smartphone adoption to increase.
iGR's new market research report, U.S. Consumer Smartphone Profile: Current Use and Future Purchase Plans, looks at consumer trends in the U.S. regarding smartphones, and addresses the following questions:

Blue State Digital Launches New Mobile Payment System

"Quick Donate" Simplifies and Streamlines Text-to-Give

Read more here: http://www.sacbee.com/2012/05/22/4508616/blue-state-digital-launches-new.html#storylink=cpy

/PRNewswire/ -- Providing a new way for issue and electoral campaigns and charities to mobilize their most loyal supporters, Blue State Digital (BSD) has launched a simplified mobile-based "Quick Donate" program, allowing repeat donors to make gifts in seconds using a mobile phone or handheld device.
BSD's Quick Donate is rolling out to BSD's political and nonprofit clients and allows donors to make a gift instantly on a mobile device in response to a solicitation. Quick Donate delivers 100% of the donated funds to the campaign or charity immediately, unlike other mobile giving platforms, which often deduct fees to mobile carriers and third-party services and may hold funds for days or weeks.
"Our clients are increasingly asking us for mobile giving and engagement tools, because more and more of their supporters are interacting with them on smartphones and mobile devices rather than on computers," explained Jascha Franklin-Hodge, Chief Technology Officer for BSD. "BSD's Quick Donate is direct marketing in its purest and most efficient form – it helps organizations connect emotionally with their most loyal fans, and gives those fans the means to take instant action."
BSD's Quick Donate mobile giving platform is an extension of an organization's BSD Tools CRM database. New Quick Donate participants are invited to save their credit card information for future donations and to opt in to receive communications.  Donors are then offered future donate opportunities in text messages or emails, and can donate in seconds by replying to a text message or clicking on a link, without having to enter credit card information again.
Detailed information on the feature is available at http://www.bluestatedigital.com/quickdonate.
"Issue organizations and campaigns work hard to keep on top of events in a fast news cycle," explained Mr. Franklin-Hodge. "BSD Quick Donate technology helps them put giving opportunities in front of their supporters quickly as events unfold, streamlining the giving process and simplifying the transaction. When making a gift takes just a few seconds, it's more likely to be an impulsive act, and that means higher participation rates and higher revenue."
Blue State Digital (BSD)

Carrefour Uses NFC for Faster Shopping

French Supermarket Giant Carrefour Uses NFC and QR Codes for Faster Shopping

carrefour city NFCFrom NFCMe.com Carrefour, a retail giant in France, has launched Mon Panier, a mobile app that lets their customers do their grocery shopping using their mobile phones.  Sounds like it has been done before with Tesco South Korea’s use of QR codes and other copycat mobile shopping campaigns, right?
But the Mon Panier campaign is very different in that it does not use QR codes or near-field communication in virtual store displays.  You do not scan the codes or wave your phones in order to put it onto your shopping cart.  Instead, Mon Panier only lets you pick the items through the app and pay for it.  You would still have to go to the store to pick up the goods.  You use near-field communication or QR codes in order to identify yourself and be able to get your orders.
This service is only available for Carrefour City, the company’s chain of convenience stores. For now, it is live at the St. Lazare outlet, but other sites are following suit in the next months.
This means that you can go grocery shopping in your pajamas, avoid the crowd, and just pay for everything on your smartphones. The grocery’s staff will put together your order for you and you can come collect these after only two hours.
When you collect your order, you enter the Mon Panier kiosk and tap your NFC phone or scan a QR code to inform the staff that you’re there to get your order.  That means that you are in and out of the store in less than five minutes!  The service is free with no delivery or picking charges.  There is also no minimum purchase amount.
This service is good but it would have been greater if the store offered free delivery with the purchases.  This would make it easier
But if you are not interested in the service or you find grocery shopping strangely relaxing, you can still download the app and use its other features.  The Mon Panier mobile app has a store locator that helps people find the outlets nearest to them. It also gives you an alerts and information on the latest promotions, deals and offers.
